Ok, so I am running my first 1/2 marathon in 12 days. MY KNEE IS SO HURT! I have slight damage (that was shown in an mri back in December)...It is killing me since my last long wrong. (I actually had to limp .5 miles). So my SIL is a PT and she sent me tips and stretches and I am doing that religiously.
Today when on google I learneda bout KT tape and I am hearing great reviews. Anyone have any tips? Tricks? Use it? Works well? HELP!
I am hearbroken right now and afraid I wont' be able to do this, I have worked so hard and I can't imagine if I couldn't run next week. THanks MFP! XOXO

We use kiniseo tape at work actually. It does work VERY well!! Its pretty much magic tape, BUT BUT BUT!!! It will make it stop hurting enough to where you wont feel injured. So the problem with that is...you can over do it and injure yourself even more. You also have to be careful and only have it taped by a certified KT taper. We have a problem finding the real stuff anymore. There is a lot of fake tape out there these days since it became popular. The elasticity runs completely in the wrong direction. Which can make things much worse.

So yes it does work, yes it is amazing, yes it will make your leg stop hurting, but dont over do it and have someone that is certified tape it for you.

I've used it when I strained a tendon on the top of my foot. Worked nicely. It has got a lot more stretch than regular sports tape so when you need it to have some give it will and when you need it to stablize it can. As for taping a knee, can't really help there. KT does have a lot of vids on how to tape different parts of the body on YouTube, though. If possible, I'd suggest taking a little time off from training to rest your knee and give it the good old cold/hot treatment to help with swelling and such. But when it comes right down to it, if your knee is telling you no, you should listen. Better to err on the side of no permanent damage.

Yes we always have to warn people repeatedly about the tape.. It will make you feel better and not injured. Which for some will make you want to push it again and in turn hurt yourself more. Pretty awesome stuff if used correctly!

Shocking it was invented 25 years ago...just never used much til the last olympics and now its huge!
  • Thank you both so much. WHere can I find someone to help me tape it? My SIL is a physical therapist. I am hoping she will know how to tape it up for me.
I am trying to rest my knee and do heat/cold as much as possible. BUT I can't quit now. I am too close!
Thanks again, I realize my spelling is horrible in my original post...I was holding my son who was sleeping on me. SORRY and thanks again!

I agree on the needing to see someone trained in how to apply KT. I jacked up my ankle (4th degree sprain) and then knee as a result of the ankle a few years ago and my PT used KT on me for months upon months. It's tricky because he would change the tape every time I went. It's really not something you can do yourself if you don't know where to tape as you could likely cause further damage.

I suggest you call up a few PTs, explain your situation and say you want to use KT. See if they can fit you in first thing tomorrow morning, a good 5-6 sessions could do wonders. Good luck, crossing my fingers for you. My first 1/2 is in 6 weeks and I'd be so stressed if I was in your shoes.:flowerforyou:

If your SIL can't do it, you can find a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner (CKTP) here when you enter your zip code: http://www.kinesiotaping.com/kta/cktp.html
  • Thanks Jill, my SIL who is coming down to MD to do the 1/2 with me is a PT, so I am going to have her tape me up!
    Thanks for the tips!

Thanks allislefttogain for promoting proper body work. There are far to many hacks out there giving this stuff a bad name and a lot of knock off brands out there. KUDOS! =0)
  • THANKS! USED It and found someone who is about 2 miles from me. Just left her a message! THANKS AGAIN!

Oh I'm sure! I wouldn't want to steer someone in the wrong direction...it's strong stuff and I can definitely see how much damage KT could cause if applied wrong and "KT" could ruin someone.

Yea maybe before the Olympics they would think that...now so many professional athletes are using it and Olympians they will probably be intimidated and think you are a bad azz! ha!! =0)
  • You guys have given me a lot of hope. And as hard as it is going to be to take this week off, I am going to do it, knowing that it will help me on the 15th reach my goal!
