How to deal with Stubborn people ?

My mum has type 2 diabetes she tells me she got it from pregnancy I don't know if that's true as I thought it was caused by a bad diet which she continues to eat junk food.

I've tried to tell her to cut back on cakes biscuits and sweets but ends up telling me to shut up pretty much.

I've seen the juicing doco "fat sick and nearly dead" and think mum could cut back on the amount of tablets she takes as she takes a lot not just for diabetes but other problems I think can be better managed with a healthy diet.

I don't understand how if someone has a crap diet and all these health problems wont put an effort into themselves. And in the end say I'm crazy and obsessed.

You're meant to give someone a wake up call where they could ultimately die.
How do you scare someone who isn't afraid of death ?
And can you get diabetes because you pregnant?

You can get gestational diabetes when you are pregnant but usually goes away after you have the baby. At least that's how it was for me.

Has you mum seen the film?

    It's called gestational diabetes.

    That's Hard!

She's lucky to have someone who loves her as much as you.

In my own experience, you can't really "make" her do anything she doesn't want to do. You can educate her on exactly what is happening to her body when she puts that crap into it, what exactly diabetes is, other health risks that come along with it. Maybe she feels as if she can't fix it and she's depressed? It's hard to really know what she is thinking, or feeling.
She prob. has her routine and can't seem to shake the bad habits? I feel for both of you! I hope you guys find help.

You can get gestational diabetes when pregnant it goes away for some women but not for all.

As for the rest of it, I understand the concern but your mother is an adult and her diet choices are not for you to decide. Mind your own business.

And fat, sick and nearly dead is just an juicing infomercial
  • According to the American Diabetes Association, gestational diabetes is a complication of about 9.2% of all pregnancies. Women who have gestational diabetes are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Perhaps you and your mom could attend a diabetes education class together to help encourage her to take better care of herself? ~Lynn /Glucerna

Pregnancy can cause gestational diabetes. However, for most, it goes away after you give birth.

Denial is common in individuals with diabetes.

The long-term complications of untreated diabetes include blindness, kidney failure, and infections that can lead to amputation.

Scare-tactics can work for stubborn people. Show her images of what happens with uncontrolled diabetes.

Ultimately, you cannot help people who don't want to help themselves.

If someone showed me those pictures when I didn't ask for help, I would tell them off, she's on prescriptions for her diabetes so she's working with a physician.. and they have already basically said to shut up about it.... she is an adult and she can make her decisions.

Plus making these judgments based on watching a crap show ... glad my daughters know better

Sorry but diabetes medications do NOTHING if the person does not change their diet and exercise.

ETA: God forbid a child actually care about their parents health.

I'm sure her concern for her mother is coming from a good place. She obviously loves her mother. That's a little harsh.

How do you know her mother isn't? And actually that is not entirely true either. The medicine can keep sugar regulated. My husband has Type 2 and eats cookies, ice creams, as part of his diet and when he isn't so good luckily the medicine keeps it in check.

Also what I said was she is obviously being treated by a physician or she would not have prescriptions for it, so your posting images of untreated is not relevant.

She may be coming from a good place, but it is still not her business.

For most diabetics, when they consume sweets (especially in excess), their blood glucose spikes- despite being on medication. I've seen it in patients more times than I care to count.

It's her mother. It is her business.

ETA: Medication is only PART of treatment. Diet and exercise is much, much more essential. Clearly the OP's mother doesn't eat the way she should or else her daughter wouldn't come to the internet asking for help. One can be on medication and still end up on dialysis, getting a foot amputated, and with deadly infections. Like I said before, I've seen it more times than I care to count.

I never said she eats foods she shouldn't be in excess. I was referring to diabetics as a whole and saying when they eat sweets in excess, their BG spikes regardless of medication. Medication doesn't work unless you do. It's a common misconception that diabetics can eat whatever the hell they want just because they take a pill every day.

OP, leave your mom alone. She's a grown-up. If she doesn't want to eat to control her diabetes the way you think she should, it's on her.

My mom had type 2 diabetes and my oldest sister would nag mom every time she ate anything that could be considered a sweet or dessert, no matter how small. Mom wasn't a big sweet eater either, she had something as a dessert and that was it. No extra snacking or stuffing her face with doughnuts. The blow up between them happened when Mom ate a Rice Krispie treat (2"x2") for dessert and my sister started in with "Should you be eating that?". Mom threw the treat on the table and walked out of the house. Mom and I ended up spending a lot of time together because I was the only kid who didn't give her crap about her eating.

@FatFreeFrolicking I think you should put a NSFW warning above those pics. It's one thing to want to show what happens to uncontrolled diabetes, but that crap is not great for people with weak stomachs.

I never said it was uncontrolled. You're putting words in my mouth (or keyboard). Given the fact that her daughter has come here very concerned, it would lead me to believe the mother's diabetes is not controlled. Seems pretty logical to me. Feel free to disagree all you want though. You're an arguer and I'm not going to continue to feed it. Happy holidays.

I'm an arguer because I am questioning how you jumped to your conclusions?

The post questioned her mother's statement on how the diabetes started? So mom's a liar?
She watched a documentary that is really an infomercial and made judgments.
Her mother already said she didn't want to discuss it with her.
So you jump to her diabetes is uncontrolled or untreated and let's use scare tactics??

Encourage her. But do not push. She's an adult who can make her own choices.

Lost my grandma because she didn't take care of her diabetes.
