I spend my days with little kids and I'm afraid my mind may be turning to mush. I need some intellectual stimulation....any recommendations on good nonfiction books to read?

Are you looking for biographies? Historical documentaries? If yes, what time period interests you? Humor? Mystery?

I wasn't looking for anything specific, I like variety :)

I am going to read "Unbroken" and "American Sniper" before I see the movies. I already saw “Lone Survivor” (with Wahlberg), but that is another option. “Starvation Heights” is a very creepy account of ‘medical murder’. I liked this because of my criminal justice background. For biographies, I would recommend “The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace”. There are two that revolve around Nazi Death Camps. "Man's Search For Meaning" is a really powerful account of life in a camp and how to maintain spirituality in trying times. "Out of the Shoebox" is another post-Nazi death camp auto-biography, with a twist.

I know you said “Non-Fiction” but I will put a plug in for a piece of fiction revolving around a true story. The most interesting account of the Civil War I have ever read is a novel called “Traveller” by Richard Adams. It is a 1st person account of the Civil War as told by Robert E Lee’s horse. I read this because my Great-great grandfather’s job was to tend to Traveller, so I already knew about the legendary horse. Slightly off-beat read, but I enjoyed it.

Winter Dance by Gary Paulsen. His true story of running the Iditarod and the insane adventures he had with his dogs to get there. It will make you run the gamut of all emotions. Absolutely an amazing book.
Then there's always 'I hope they serve Beer in Hell, *kitten* Finish First, and Hilarity Ensues . Three true yet insanely offensive and insanely hilarious books by Tucker Max

Night by Elie Wiesel. It was required for one of my freshman classes, and it still haunts me 30 years later. First-hand concentration camp account.

20,000 Days and Counting by Robert D. Smith. Short but impactful book. I've given probably 50 copies away.
