NSV...gym respect

So I lost 50 lbs from Jan-May of this year and then in June started weightlifting (and when I say start I mean for the first time...ever) I go religiously M,W,F at 6am for an hour before work. There are usually the same people in there every morning. A few people on treadmills, 1-2 using the weight machines and then the same 2-3 guys over in the free weights section. These same guys have watched me slowly add weight to my lifts. I started squatting 110, benching 135 and dead lifting 135. This morning was the date I had set to test all of my 1 rep max's on those three main lifts.
It also just happened that a friend of these other guys showed up to work out with them this morning. By the time he got there I had gone through my warm-up sets and had my old Personal best up on the rack to squat...365. He looked at me, looked at the bar and was like "Are you sure you can do that?" The other guys who have seen me in there every day slowly working up to that were just "You just watch him". I proceeded to make 365...then 385...then I put on 4 plates and went for 405lbs. He was astonished that this little white boy was squatting 400 lbs.
Meanwhile this guy was over at the bench station with his friends and he started warming up with 135 and then was about to go right up to 225 and the strongest of the others was like "hell no! you're going to hurt yourself." He then put 185 up there and could barely get 4 1/2 reps. When I went to test my bench I warmed up with his 185 and then through 245 up there and made my lift with relative ease. They were like, "This is why you show up every week, this kid was weaker than you when he started and now he puts you to shame!"
Throughout the morning the new guy just kept making comments...asking how long I've been lifting, what am I training for, etc... At the end, he just walked away shaking his head say "Man, you got my respect."

Consistency is the thing. No doubt about it. That's very good.0

NICE.
that's a great feeling to watch that all creep up AND have people recognize that hard work. You should be incredibly proud of yourself.
Also hell yes on a 4 plate squat.0 -
I don't get why you'd run your 7-8min miles, SL with your epic 4 plate squat, and then add P90X.

excellent. Excellent.

Because I can...LOL
I've always been a runner...of sorts. I grew up playing soccer and still play in adult leagues so I like to keep my wind for that. I'm not doing both SL and p90x. I'm stopping SL to start p90x in January. A couple reasons...I just need a mental break from getting under heavy weight 3 times a week and I'd like to drop another 15 lbs of fat and think that will be easier on p90x (more calories burned per workout).0 -
This is a great story!! The first one I read here at MFP today, so thank you for the positive energy!!!!0

Cyber High 5, that is a great day at the gym and the one that makes you want to keep going back. You probably inspired the new guy, hopefully you can be an example for him!0

Dude, nooooo! You just hit a 4 plate squat! Don't drop it for P90X, at least not for the full 90 days!
My soul is weeping lol0 -

Sorry...My goals are not just to be strong. I'm sure if I just kept eating like a hog and doing nothing but squats I could get to 500lb...but at what cost? Everything comes with trade offs. At this point I'm willing to sacrifice a little on my max to drop some weight and maybe see my abs for the first time in my life! Honestly I'd rather have a squat of 350 at 175 lbs than a 400@190.
that doesn't mean I won't try and get back up to 400 @ 175 though.0 -

Nice man and yes you are genetically gifted I will say. Not to many people I know who have been lifting for twice the length of time are near your stats.0

Nice to know I'm gifted at something. I've always been "good" at sports, but more of a "jack of all trades, master of none" type of guy LOL It'll be interesting to see how this next year goes.
