Standing All Day As A Cosmotologist

Ok I know this may be a really stupid question but I thought I would ask anyway. So I am becoming a cosmetologist (3 months left!!!) and I stand about 80% of the day using my arms a lot and it is exhausting. Do you record this or can you? I have to imagine I am burning some calories cutting, perming, hairstyles, blow drying and so on but I could be wrong. Was just curious if anyone had any thoughts on this. Fitbit only tracks steps so I don't know. Any input would be helpful!!

Any extra is negligible. Fatigue like is not a reliable indicator of effort.

I work in retail. Not exactly the same but I had a hard time figuring out what my activity level should be so I understand your confusion. Standing does burn more calories than sitting but probably not nearly as much as you would like to think. I just want to caution you not to think you're burning a whole boatload of calories when you probably aren't. If it were me I would set my activity level as lightly active.

When you set your calorie goals in MFP, there is a place where you check whether you are "sedentary," "lightly active," "moderately active," etc. MFP uses this to determine how many calories your daily activity burns, before exercise, and also to establish your daily calorie limit. The description MFP gives for "lightly active" is" "Spend a good part of the day on your feet." I would choose this one. So, in short, is should be accounted for in your every-day activity, not logged as additional exercise.
  • Thank you, that is very helpful. I have mine set to sedentary so I will change that. I know I am not burning a lot but just felt like it should be somewhat noted that I use my arms all day and any girl who blow drys their hair knows it is not fun to do it for a long time lol. Thanks again

^This. Work (including housework, yard work and childcare) is activity level. Work = activity level. Workouts = exercise.
