I was a day late getting my depo-provera shot so I've been bleeding extremely heavy for the past 2 1/2 weeks..2-3 times then a normal flow..I'm losing strength fast, doctor thinks im losing iron, so I should take multi vitamins..anyone suggest anything thats strong? I find myself eating more to keep my strength enough just long enough to exercise. I'm miserable. I'm lacking water a little bit..maybe 4-5 glasses a day. If i drink more will it help me clean out the clots/ liquid stuff..looks like a bowl of fruit punch every time  I know for a fact im holding several pounds of water..and I know water! water! water! is the best thing, im working on it.

I don't think increasing your water intake is going to help at all.
I take prescription irons supplements, but there are a lot over the counter. I'd chat with a pharmacist at whatever store you go to and ask their advice. Taking iron with vitamin C helps absorption.0 -
I'm not an expert in this area, but I would suggest going back to your doctor. I don't know anything about the shot, I am on the pill. When I was in HS my TOM was wacked out. Heavy bleeding for 5 months. The doctor finally put me on the pill to regulate things. I would definitely try to get more iron so you don't get sick. The only advice I have is to get back to the doctor. Good luck.0

Hmm..it's really odd that the doctor thinks you are losing iron yet didn't prescribe or recommend anything him/herself. I have no advice for you but I hope that you start to feel better soon!0

I just saw a doctor today and got a call back..just told me because I was late with my shot, increase bleeding is normal. Try taking multi vitimins..give it a week, can call back if still the same.0

Is the doctor you're seeing a GP? If so, I would see a specialist. I've found from tons of prior experience that GPs mean well, but they don't have as good of an understanding as to these problems as a gynecologist would. They are also great at putting your mind at ease
I have always been irregular and a few times I would bleed for 7-8 weeks (heavily) -- scary I know! I didn't get anything solved until I saw a specialist.
Hope you feel better! *hugs*0 -
I went through the same dealie. Heavy, nonstop period for 3, almost 4 months. Spending half my damn paycheck on freaking pads and tampons. I FINALLY went to the doc (phobia) and got put on Yaz. Gone. She never really told me what had happened, so I just figured it was hormonal since the Yaz regulated it, but just keep snacks within reach until you can figure this out. Don't wanna almost pass out from blood loss like me!0

I am glad your doctor got back with you about this.
I am on Depo too, and missed 2 months of not getting my shot and had no bleeding at all.
My nurse told me about the ibuprofen regimen for halting the spotting (if you are only spotting). I never did it because by that time I had stopped spotting and I would have been unsure about taking so much ibuprofen. I think it was 2 pills every 4 hours.0 -
The only things that will stop the heavy TOM are hormones and time. This might be one of the few times when water won't help at all. While you are probably passing a lot of blood, there really isn't much water/fluid to it. It's the lining of the uterus, period. (No pun intended. Well, maybe a little. :smokin: )
A general iron supplement should be fine. Beware that your stool may turn a bit dark green or black. The iron can also constipate you, so consider a stool softener.
You could also eat more high iron food - red meat, dark green leafy veggies (like spinach), dried fruit (mmm, good stuff and a great low cal snack to beat a sweet tooth - I'm partial to craisins myself), liver (ick), beans and egg yolks.
Good luck - feel better soon!0 -
Happened to me. I had my period for 15 weeks straight........I never went back for another shot! My husband would have left me if that continued!0

I would up the water intake and eat lots of high iron foods (like spinach) to try and replace what you are losing. Hope that helps.0

Let me just add that while it seems like a whole lotta blood, it really isn't. Because it's not all blood...it a lot of other tissue from the lining of the uterus that is being shed. Until bleeding reaches super super heavy, it's not something that will cause you any crazy side effects or make you pass out. It's just not enough volume. Some fatigue or very minor shortness of breath might be noticed.
What is super super heavy? You would not be able to handle the flow AT ALL with tampons. If you begin to completely soak through 2 or more pads AN HOUR for several hours in a row...that's when you'll feel the effects.0 -
Skip the multi or do that and IRON pills! That should help some and yes keep with the water and workouts, healthy food!!!0
