1st time ever counting calories

This is my first time ever counting calories. I should have started this years ago when the pounds started to pile on and the everyday movements of life were getting harder and harder. I no longer take the stairs at work, I am too out of breath when I get to the third floor. I avoid bending over to pick up something because my back hurts. I don't purchase new clothes because nothing fits right and I don't like how they look on me.

I was the tall skinny girl. What happened?! It has snuck up on me so slowly I can't identify exactly when or what happened. I knew it was happening but always thought I would get better soon. I've gone to the gym for a few months at a time, but never enough to make a lasting difference.

I am not going to tell my friends and family I have made a commitment to lose weight and get fit. I am one of those people that starts many things and some of them I don't follow through on then they haunt me with the guilt of not completing or following through. I want my friends and family to notice the changes they see in me. That will make me feel the absolute best. That the changes can be seen, are not just talked about.

I have learned that in my group of family and friends I can be an influencer. Maybe getting myself fit and healthy can be the best influence of all. I may not notice the influence I have right away. Maybe it won't be realized until my children are in there fifties and remember how their Mom made a commitment to be healthy at that age and that will inspire them to do the same.

Today is my day to begin.

Good luck! The great thing about MFP is that you don't have to count calories, the site does it for you! Just log what you eat and you'll get a good lesson in portion control and good food choices! I like the idea of not telling your friends and family about your "plan." If you're making life changes and not going on a diet, it's not really important that they "know." Again, good luck!

I am also new to this website
My new life begins tomorrow. I too do not like to share my goals with others for fear of failing. I am also a smoker and need to conquer that terrible habit. I need to make a commitment and stick to it. I will be 55 this month. My mother had a stroke when she was 53 and this scares me that it could happen to me. I weigh 150 lbs at 5'1" and would like to lose 25 lbs. I have 3 grown children and it's about time I make a change for myself.

bonnieh1638 - please do make a commitment to stop smoking. From what I have seen in those that do stop, they are so very happy they did. And from what I have read the health benefits are so fast. My father died because of smoking and so did his mother. They had the oxygen in the nose and a cigarette in their mouths almost to the very end. My husband died from a brain bleed at 44. He didn't smoke and it wasn't determined to be a stroke but I do know how devastating a stroke or bleed can be. Keep in touch, I would like to hear how you are doing.

" I am too out of breath when I get to the third floor". So walk to the second floor and then hop on the elevator. It's better than nothing. Each little step is a step toward success. B)

Hi and welcome! You sound just like me. When I decided to lose weight I didn't tell anyone until I had lost about 15LBs.
Have you read through this post? He's got some great tips. (including eating a nutrient dense diet. MFP can help there too as you'll see what gets you the most bang for your calorie buck.
