Hi folks. Does anyone follow a FODMAP diet? How strict are you in following it? Has it helped with SIBO or IBS at all? Do you do anything else for your SIBO?

Also, is it difficult to get in enough veggies with this diet? Any staples? I'm also a vegetarian (no meat, fish/dairy okay).

Pretty easy once you find your particular intolerances or a workable solution. The FODMAP table from the paleo mom website is a good example.

The problem with that table is that it eliminates all grains, which is not necessary.

The FODMAP approach was developed by researchers at Monash University. There is a lot of information on their site, including a blog with recipes and an app.

    This list is good. http://thecellfitness.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/low-fodmap.jpg

    This blog is great. http://blog.katescarlata.com/fodmaps/

You may not have issues with all categories of FODMAPS. There is a protocol for restriction and reintroduction per category and you can also have challenge testing done (by breath testing).

Jumping on to see if anyone has any feedback - I'm going to start an elimination diet based on FODMAP to see if I can figure out if diet is exacerbating IBS. Am also vegetarian!

My GI doc recommended that I start this. I have printed and saved so much material but yet I am still confused about dairy.

Don't know if this helps, but it's basically this: if it feeds the bacteria, or if it ADDS bacteria that can feed on what you eat, then it may be a problem. So some dairy, like yogurt with live cultures, can be detrimental, because it provides more bacteria to feed on the substances you don't digest as well, and that causes more bloating and such. Some of us seem to have issues with extra sugars present in dairy, some don't - you kind of have to experiment a bit with this.

There is a really nice app put out by the Monash University on this diet (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/monash-university-low-fodmap/id586149216?mt=8 )
I don't know if it's available on the android. But the nice thing about it is it differentiates between different TYPES of issues. Some people digest certain molecules well, but others not as well, and the app lists everything on the low FODMAP diet but ALSO tells you why they are on there, what molecules they have that may be a problem. So often, you may find that you can have foods in a certain category of molecule that others may not be able to.

I have a different condition that is due to bacteria issues and this diet has helped a lot. I know a lot of other folks who have had a lot of help, too. Some folks with SIBO I know did well on this for a few years and then were able to slowly transition back to a normal diet, but some have the SIBO resurge if they didn't stay on the diet for, so far as they can tell, forever. In either case, it takes a while to really work well, so you have to try a few months sometimes before you see a lot of results.
