I'm in a challenge group and one of our challenges was to give up ALL SODA for a week! I'm a diet coke addict! I really didn't miss it and still am going strong! (just over a week) You just need to find what works for you. There are a lot of teas and vitamin waters out there that are sweet. I do like plain old tea but am usually waaaaay too lazy to make it. Hope this helps!

They say diet coke is bad for you but they really don't have any evidence proving so..... I switched from regular coke to diet a couple months ago and it has helped me lose weight :)-

it may be bad for you, but hey it covers your soda craving and any other snacking you want . but yet again what in the world these days is really good for you?

That is all I drank being diabetic was Cafeine Free Diet Coke. But I gave it up and I don't miss it. Just cut back until you can give it up.

If you are drinking the regular stuff you will notice a calorie drop right away.

Diet is bad for you, because of all the artificial sweeteners and additives in them. Calories arent the only thing to be watching.

anyways, buy some club soda, mix it with fruit juice, muchbetter for you

or club soda and lime or lemon, or you can blend a few strawberries or raspberries and add it to the club soda.

    Its better for you,.

ORRRRR better yet, just quit drinking it and suffer for a few days or a whole week or so until all the sugar is out of your system and then you will be craving free and you can break the habit.

all it is is a habit, not an addiction.

i was addicted to diet coke as well but i made myself like water! i started by adding something such as crystal lite or a lemon or anything that wouldn't make it so bland. i am also now addicted to sparking water which is a 180 degree turn in the right direction! good luck i know it sucks!

For me once I was willing to give up something, actually giving it up wasn't that hard.
I still drink sugar-free redbull though, I'm a student, I need caffine lol

Its "helped" you lose weight? or is it simply that there are no calories in it so you can drink as much as you want and it doesn't effect your calorie count?

Its okay every now and then but to drink a few a day isn't good for you.. the artificial sweeteners aren't good for you.

I agree, almost everything is genetically altered now days
  • As a doctor, I have to disagree that diet is worse than regular. But then again you don't have to be a doctor to know that. All the negative studies done on animals are at doses way way above what you take in by drinking a few DCs.

Diet sodas are supposed to be bad for you because of how it broken down in your body. There is no proof for this just speculation. I have also read that the reason diet sodas are bad for you is because your body then has to overcompensate for the lack of sugar in the drink by seeking out other surgary foods. I think all of it is crap honestly but I say watch how your body reacts to drinking diet sodas and go from there. If it doesn't make you gain weight then drink away, if it does switch to water.

I totally agree with this! I have a Diet "pop" usually once a day and it satisfies my craving. I still get my water in so I don't see a problem with it.

I gave up soda and all other drinks except for water, coffee, tea and milk...well, once in a while sobe 0 cal or a glass of wine although this is rare. I gave them up cold turkey. There is no other way to go, you could do it in baby steps, but I would rather just be done with the cravings then to have them linger. It will suck for a couple weeks, but when you come out the other side, you will not miss it. Make sure you have a beverage with you at all times so you are not tempted by thirst. You will be surprised at the weight you lose when you give up all forms of soda and other beverages and you will drink more water as an added bonus.

Oh one thing, I do allow myself soda only when alcohol is involved...lol...a girl's got to do what a girls got to do...however I have only partaken in the soda/alcohol combination once in the past six months, so it does not interfere too much.

Good luck, it will be worth it!!!

The very first time I quit years ago, when I was drinking it day and night. I was in bed for a week withdrawing. I recently got back to drinking it for about 6 months, one small a day, and I just quit about 3 weeks ago. I just try and keep a bottle of water in hand, it helps me a lot psychologically with it.

Try unsweet tea with a slice of lemon squeezed into it. You won't like it at first (I sure didn't) but now I love it. I just kept ordering it and now it's actually very refreshing. By ordering that, I was able to quit soda for a couple months. I drink diet now (i don't care how bad it is for me... I probably do more harm to myself forgetting to put sunscreen on most days), because regular soda is just too sweet for me.

Artificial sweeteners do the same things that white sugar and high fructose corn syrup do in your body, turn into fat. I stopped soda and caffeine at the same time cold turkey. If you are worried I would advise just cutting back slowly.

I used to be addicted to diet soda, especially Diet Sunkist & Diet Sprite. About a year ago, I got a really bad cold and the antibiotic changed my taste buds for ANY carbonated beverage. Very quickly I was able to give up my addiction to diet soda. However, I quickly substituted carbonated drinks for sweet tea, especially McDonald's sweet tea. Not a good change to make. My Chiropractor suggested that if I need that sweet tea or soda to follow it up with water which was a great idea, that I didn't follow through with. Now that I'm focused on my weight loss and still have an addiction to McDonald's sweet tea, I do half sweet/half unsweet. It dropped the calories from 320 to 140 for my large "get me through the day" addiction. It takes some time to get the body used to the change, but worth it.

I hate diet pop! To me it doesn't taste like the real thing so I don't even bother drinking it. I don't buy pop so then I won't be tempted to drink it. Sometimes if I go out to eat, then I will have a regular pop as a treat, and I don't even drink the whole glass. Before I would have 2 or 3 refills of it. I think you will find that once your body is used to not having it all the time, you won't want it as much.

Yes I think it helps because it kills my sweet cravings and replaced the couple hundred calories I was drinking everyday in regular soda. I'm sorry but I have to disagree, I don't think diet coke is the demon everyone makes it out to be on this website. I don't think they are "good" for you but I don't think they are bad for you either.

Same, I can't stand the taste of the diet ones. And the after taste they leave is even worse!

I just quit drinking it most of the time. If we go out for a meal I'll have a coke but at home it's water or tea.

I am glad to say that soda is one of those things that if I never drank it again, EVER, I'd be totally cool with it. Once in a blue moon I might have a Hansen's or Jones Soda or some other such product, but as far as I am concerned, soda is a waste of my time and money. That being said, I think suggestions of taking sparkling water and hitting it with some juice might be a nice alternative.

I was a Mt Dew addict. Seriously. I drank 3-4 cans a day. I weaned myself down to one and for a long time, I refused to give up that one pop. One day, I was at the gym on the treadmill. I had burned 170 calories and suddenly I realized that I had been on the treadmill working my butt off and all I had really burned was one can of Dew. It was like a lightbulb went on. The next day I went and bought a bottle of diet Dew. That crap is disgusting. But, I started drinking it for the caffeine. Within a week, I had weaned myself off the regular Dew. Deciding I HATED the after taste of diet Dew - I basically stopped it cold turkey. Finished off the 2ltr I had and never bought it again. I will tell you I craved the regular Dew for a month or so after I stopped drinking it. I wanted it sooo bad, but I knew if I gave in and drank it again -- I would be right back to my starting point. So, I help firm and now, I don't want it or miss it.
