Losing Weight with a Bad Hip

So, with about 120 pounds to lose this year, I find myself wishing I could at least do cardio and not bank solely on calories in. I had hip impingement surgery last year and the pain has returned. I can barely stand or walk without pain, so cardio is out of the question. Anyone out there have advice or have been through this challenge?

As I lost weight my replaced hips bother me less and less. I walk like 1/4-1/2 mile every day and do not use the power carts at WM/Lowes any longer.

Losing weight without exercise is a plus in that you are going with food reduction so you may not regain as bad is my thought.

I'm over 100lbs lost now, RA and fibro - yeah it's really difficult with the pain, my exercise had to start of with VERY light resistance training & light cardio like walking or using the stationary bike, and i get tons of days where I am in too much pain to get up.

Swimming is a great form of cardio which is entirely low impact and will support your body weight, hopefully relieving some of the discomfort and pain you would experience from normal exercise - however you are still recovering from surgery, and you may just have to as you say rely on calories in. Some resistance training will be good for you though, you can avoid moves that use the hips & ensure your metabolism stays stable.

Can you consult a physical therapist to advise you on what you should and shouldn't do? I do agree that after you lose weight the pain will probably subside a bit, but you certainly don't want to make it worse now.

I had a bone graft done on my hip back in 1999 and I'm very fortunate that it healed completely. I have no limitations and no pain. I'm sorry for your troubles.

Is swimming or the elliptical a possibility?
