what do you mean "eat right"? there is no good or bad food, there is just food. What are your goals? Fat loss, I assume? Just eat in a calorie deficit and weigh/log/measure everything….food type is not important to weight loss, calorie deficit is.

Ok for instance, i am incredibly under my calorie goal and over the fat grams. I ate a sandwich n a bowl of cheerios today. I think for better progress i need to learn better foods to eat. I am just starting out n new to tracking

    Hi Don,

It's easy to be overwhelmed when there is so much information. You don't give a lot of info about your goals or current lifestyle... so I would suggest pulling right back to the basics.

I'm talking, five serves (palm sizes) of vegetables a day.

Then build on that with your proteins, fat sources, additional carb sources.

Try to get as much from natural, wholefood sources as possible, and reduce things like excess sugars in sodas, highly processed food etc.

We could go into calories, proportions, but it all sort of depends on where you are now and where you are looking to go.

Here's a good place to look for a visual

    https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/guidelines/australian-guide-healthy-eating

It's easy to be overwhelmed- happy to be added as a friend if you want to chat further.

    Good luck.

As for goals i am at least 100 lbs over weight. I lost it once and know i have a ton of will power to do it again. Just now got motivated to try again.

so all you ate is a sandwich and a bowl of cheerios..???? that is what, 600 calories…

what calorie number did MFP give you when you put all your stats in? You need to NET that number...

There's no fat in cheerios. What was in the sandwich to put you over your fat grams?

I ask again - what are you trying to achieve? Are you thin trying to get thinner? Obese trying to get healthy? Skinny trying to bulk up?

Im around 295 lbs. Im trying to lose as much as possible ive been going to the gym again. Yes my diet sucks. This app says i need 1850 calories to lose 2lbs a week.

The sandwhich was 2 pieces of hard salami n a slice of cheese on wheat bread. I gasped when it said it was too much fat.

if your goal is primarily fat loss and MFP gave you 1850 calories then you need to make sure that you eat 1850 calories a day.

fat is not bad, and does not make you fat; overeating calories makes you fat
carbs are not bad, and do not make you fat; overating calories makes you fat
sugar is not bad, and does not make you fat; overeating calories makes you fat..
    get my drift..?

    here is what I suggest..

get a food scale and weigh, log, measure everything.
    eat 1850 calories a day.
keep working out and moving more
realize that there are no bad or good foods. If you want to eat calories and can fit it into your 1850 then eat the ice cream…if you want to eat some pizza, eat some pizza.
repeat until you get desired results...

Your proportion of fat2 was high, because you didn't have other food. In other words, the problem wasn't that your fat was too high, it was that everything else was too low.

Absolutely cannot agree with this enough!!!
Donbell - as you start this definitely keep the above in mind. There are no 'bad' foods, there are just bad quantities of food. Get on the front foot with a positive relationship with food, know that it is your friend in this and not your enemy, and then the only way is forward.

    Great advice ndj.

That sandwich claims to have 220 grams of fat?? Several other hard salami sandwiches in the database are in the 15-30 range. I think that database entry you used was incorrect. Try one of the other listings for a more realistic total.

Thanks for pointing this out. I adjusted it. That was a bad listing.

Also im very serious about this. I just dont know where to start. I have a hard time thinking i should be eatting way more. Says 1600 calories yet. Thats probably not going to happen as its 8:30 pm now

Go talk to a nutritionist and discuss your goals. That's helped me a lot.
