Living with others: how do you cope with tempting late-night snacks?

So, I share a refrigerator/kitchen with other people, and they buy a TON of cookies/cakes/other sweet snacks. I resist these things during the day (unless I genuinely want it, in which case I safely budget it into my daily calorie goal), but they're much harder to resist at night when I'm half-conscious (and sometimes actually sleepwalking!).

They aren't going to stop buying them just because it's a temptation for me, so I was wondering how other MFP users deal with living with people who keep calorie-laden treats around the house? Do you have healthier snacks on hand in case you wander into the kitchen in the middle of the night? Do you have someone lock your bedroom door so you can't wander? ;)

i live alone but I keep ice cream, cookies, etc on hand. I just save about 300 calories for the end of the night for them and then eat them then. I also make sure that they fit into m calorie/macro/micor goal ..if they do not, I either have less of them, or do not have them..

or you could just not eat them….

One option would be an earlier bedtime. If you can't get to sleep early, start getting up psycho early to work out.

It cures the can't sleep problem pretty well, and you're unlikely to be getting up to snack.

If we have treats at home (which is rare) I'll either have a small bit, or just not bother. I make sure I have something I can grab, like some natural yogurt or rice cakes.

We usually put treats high up anyway lol to stop the kids getting them, so it's not easy to just grab them.

Your roommates let you eat their food? That was a big NO when I was in college. I would just suggest not eating what isn't yours.

I have a snack in the evening. I don't get up to snack after I go to bed. I wait until morning to eat. I know I have eaten enough calories. I will be fine until breakfast.

Drink some water and wait an hour before eating anything. Maybe you will be able to go back to sleep before eating.
Have fruit or something like a granola bar or yogurt you can grab for a snack.
Don't eat someone else's food. Make it a firm rule for yourself.
If you sleepwalk often maybe get some professional help.

I live with family, actually, so it's pretty communal, people leave things on the table, etc.

The problem is that I'm not thinking coherently about it when I do it. I'm half-asleep and I only have a vague memory of snacking when I wake up. I'm not consciously saying, "I want to eat these cookies." I just remember eating them the next morning.

Sleepwalking isn't preventable, unfortunately. I don't do anything crazy like eat inedible/dangerous things, but I've talked to psychiatrists/psychologists/other doctors about it, and there's no cure. (You can take sedatives to reduce it in some cases, but I cannot take those meds due to other medical problems.)

I really like the idea of keeping healthier snacks out in the kitchen, though! Maybe I'll go for the fruit if I see it before I see the cookies. Budgeting 300 calories is also a good idea.

    Thanks. :)

I have this casein protein pudding I eat at night, cookies and cream flavor. This is so yummy.

I suggest making some sugar free pudding or whatever treat sounds good to you.
