Hi, I am new to this, but am determined to achieve 3 goals. Lose weight, Get Fit and Stop Smoking. Has anyone had any success with trying to lose weight/get fit and stop smoking at the same time? Friends that have tried have failed and either not quit or not been able to lose / maintain weight.

to be real about it... I would focus on stop smoking first.. after about a month of truly stopping then I would start with the other. Quitting is hard and in my opinion will take all your focus :)

I quit smoking after 14yrs of it.... it sucked to smoke & sucked to quit, so BRAVO for being ready to break free from that bondage!!! OK, you may be on to something.......become a non smoker & loose weight in the process.... wow. The up side to your plan would be that you don't replace the smoking with eating poorly and have to break a whole new bad habit. It's doable!!

If you can handle your desire to smoke by exercising & other good patterns ....... and your desire to overeat by exercising & other good patterns, can you imagine how quickly you'll see results?

You should go for it. I still struggle with the overeating, but once I quit smoking I never went back (despite living with a heavy smoker), so if you need any support there, please send me a friend request. I've been a non-smoker for 15years now- woot!

    Good luck!!!!!!

I didn't do them simultaneously, but I finally quit smoking for the 3rd time about 8 years ago. Once I got through the first month, I realized that I had the ability to do what I set my mind to and decided to use my powers for good. I used that same mentality to reduce my weight.

Fortunately I was able to not ever want to smoke again, but I put the weight back on because I went about it wrong, using one of the fad diets. This time I'm using a more strategic approach that seems to be working (most days).

When you boil it down, it's the same hard work, dedication, persistence, willpower, and mind set to do both. So if you can get yourself in the right frame of mind, to change your LIFE, then I would suggest tackling them both at the same time. You will be shocked at what a mental victory it will be when you succeed! Best of Luck.
  • Thanks for your messages of support. I am definitely determined to do this. I have found when i feel like i need a cigarette, i go for a short run or take my dog out for a walk. Even a mini workout at home. Nothing majorly strenuous but just to make me a little out of breath and to take my mind of smoking. The only downside i have found so far is that my muscles are a little sore today. Will need to take it a little easier if i am to make this work.
    Thanks again.

I did all three at the same time 2 months ago. Still going strong and down 6.5kg! And I agree, working out is a really good way to take your mind off of cigarettes. That and a ton of chewing gum lol.

I quit smoking a year ago, then started losing weight about 5 months later, and started focusing on fitness about 3 months after that.

Quitting smoking was my only goal I actually set out to do. Losing weight and fitness weren't priorities, really. Once I accomplished quitting, everything else just kind of fell into place, but I packed on some pounds when I quit smoking, making my weight an even bigger problem to tackle than it was already.

Quitting smoking, imo, should be your priority, but if you can kill 2 or 3 birds with 1 stone, then I don't see why you shouldn't if you really are serious about achieving these goals. It would be a lot more efficient.

    Good luck.
