How long does Chicken keep?

Hi, I was at the gym on my lunch yesterday and the trainer told me that if I wanted huge results I needed to shock my body. He told me I have to cut out 4 things... Bread (eeek!!), cereals, starch and fruits (except apple and pears). I'm kind of freaking out!!! I don't know if I'll cut them out 100% because well...that's like all I eat but that's the problem! So I might allow myself 2-3 servings of starch a week but in very small amounts.

Abviously this is going to take much planning and prep to be able to stay on track. I'll need to eat seperate meals because I can't force my husband or son to eat as I will...which leads me to my question. If I cook chicken breasts, fish or turkey breasts at home...how long will they keep refrigerated?

This is going to be one of the toughest challenges of my life but, it's worth it!
I'M WORTH IT!!

If you have any other tips to share... I'm open to anything. Please keep it positive.
Thanks for you time MFP!!

I usually don't keep it around longer than 2-3 days, myself. I get too afraid of it going bad.

As for the no starches... I found an AWESOME tortilla. I get them at Sam's Club, but I've seen them at Wal Mart. They're called Ole Xtreme Wellness. They are high fiber/low carb. I used to eat cereal a lot, but I've put that on hold for now because my cereal bowl was pretty big. *blush*

I have NOT cut fruits. The "sugars" in them are entirely different than table sugar or corn syrup. I eat tons of fruit-including smoothies-and I monitor my sugar several times a day and it's always perfect at my postprandial when I've had fruit. I have cut way back on other starches, though, except for my brown rice. I have it a couple times a week. I cheated this week and had baked potatoes TWICE. O_o

    Good luck! :)

I'd say maximum of 3 days clingfilmed and refrigerated then cooked until piping hot. Alternatively you could prepare meals in 2 person sized portions and freeze them, then leave to deforst during the day and they can heat them up for dinner.

Your trainer has told you to cut these things out in order to get your liver to release its glycogen stores, after about 48 hours of your restricted diet your body will begin to use your stored fat for energy rather than the cereal or bread you may otherwise have for breakfast or dinner. If you are going to do this you will need to cut out 100% of the things he has told you to do. Don't worry, this won't be forever! Search "Ketosis" for more information.

You are totally right that you are worth it!!! Great attitude to start off with to be sure...

I buy chicken at Sam's Club (Tyson, boneless, skinless breasts).
I pull out 6 or so at a time, thaw them in the fridge then grill them or cook them in a pan with Worcestershire and garlic (and Pam non-stick in lieu of oil).
Assuming your fridge is keeping a good temperature in it - you should be able to go (safely) 4 days of cooked meat.
I also try to cook my meat within 3 days of thawing..

So... From frozen to cooked - you could stick it in on Sunday and not have to cook it until Thursday, then you could have it until Monday basically.

I take the chicken breasts, once cooked, and put them in packages of two in the fridge. Then I'll cut one up for lunch, then use one for a salad, protein snack, etc...

Other things I've used to replace starchy foods are:
Greek Yogurt - Plain in lieu of Sour Cream, Vanilla added to fruit smoothies, protein shakes, or just eaten straight - after about a week I found myself thinking it was dessert :)

Protein Powder - Protein keeps you from feeling hungry longer than starch/carbs and fats. I always have a Protein Shake in the morning and find that at lunch I'm able to make better choices because I'm not REALLY hungry...

Fruit - Think Blue... Blueberries, blackberries, and the like are wonderful on the nutrition scale and a great way to get a sweet treat without the bad carbs...

Tuna - Canned tuna is ok (Solid White Albacore Tuna is FAR better than the chunk) and the package tuna is even tastier...
I also buy frozen tuna steaks at Sam's (love those things) and grill them up - again they are fantastic on salads or as your main meat/protein course on a meal...

Breads... I've switched ENTIRELY to whole grains... Sara Lee has a Whole Grain 45 calorie (a slice) bread that I really like, I also really like the Ezekiel bread line. (http://foodforlife.com/sprouted-grain-difference/ezekiel-4-9.html)

Wow!! Thanks for those tips. I'm commited to this change but I have to admit, I was pretty discouraged yesterday. About a month ago I had decided to completly change my eating habbits and I thought I was doing well and now I have to change it again. I feel much better today. Your tips have opened my eyes to this change. It's not so scary any more.

Now...time to put a grocery list and a weekly meal plan together and get to the store tonight so I can start eating properly. I can't really commit yet because well... I'll starve without the proper food the replace the bad food lol.

    You guys rock!

I am actually super curious - are you saying that you can cook the chicken with veggies or whatever, and then freeze it, and it will taste ok when reheated? That would be fantastic. so far i am too afraid to freeze anything other than soup....

Yep most things freeze well. Pasta, veggies, potatoes, meat, etc. Rice is one of the exceptions I know - it doesn't taste too good after cooking/freezing/reheating. This is the only way I can eat healthy most days for lunch. On weekends I make big batches of soup, casseroles, etc. and freeze individual portions. I take them out and let them thaw in the fridge and heat them up for lunch!

Yep, I freeze any left overs apart from rice or salad as the water molecules in these foods will cause the cell walls to burst as they expand during freezing and then when you defrost them they will look like goo, lol.

I freeze things in freezer bags as then they will freeze in what ever shape you shove them in at which is useful when you have to share your freezer with housemates.
