Hi all
I've recently been diagnosed with Crohn's disease. Does anyone else suffer? Any tips and ideas about what to eat or not?
Thanks

Hi! I was diagnosed the end of last year. I've started to keep a log of what I eat and symptoms so I can look for patterns of what brings it on. I have noticed that one of my triggers is alcohol, I'm not a big drinker anyway but definitely going to keep a closer eye on that in the future. Also during a flare up I tend to stick to soups and things that are easy to digest, nothing acidic! I've searched for hours but their is no specific diet to follow with Crohn's which is a bummer! Everyone's symptoms are different and flare up with different foods. Maybe try keeping a log and cutting out different food groups to begin and see how your symptoms are, then when you have found things that make it flare you will know to avoid them! :) Not much help in terms of diet but good luck!

I don't have crohns but akylosing spondylitis and currently on Humira. I have been logging everything and seeing if my flares react. good luck!

Ask your doctor what your Vitamin D3 level is could be one thing that might help.

An older and basic article about pre crohns disease.

    telegraph.co.uk/health/10686624/Vitamin-D-could-it-stop-modern-diseases.html
This article is very detailed and contains info that may be considered too much info by some. Vit D3 is actually a hormone with receptor sites throughout the body. We now have info that people may become overweight as a result of a lack of Vitamin D3 before birth and/or after birth. It is now thought about 4500 hundreds of our genes express themselves depending on having a high enough level of Vitamin D3.

Again the info in this article will upset some I am sure as it did in my case because we suffered from a lack of understanding for so long about the importances of Vit D3 when it comes to our health and the genes that we can pass on to our kids.

The bottom line is Vitamin D3 may help many of us with chronic diseases and prevent our kids from ever getting them. I started our kids on Vitamin D3 this week since some research indicates Vit D3 is more effective than flu shots to prevent getting the flu.
  • I've been diagnosed with Crohn's for 5 years and my trigger is fiber, so I generally stay away from whole grains and fruits and vegetables - which is torture because I love fruit! A friend of mine is triggered by dairy while another is triggered by meat. Try cutting out different food groups for at least a one week period to see if their absence improves how you feel. This is the only way to find your trigger and when you know you don't feel good, listen to your body! No food tastes as good as being healthy feels! Good luck to you!

This article is written in a simple format but contains some good info about managing Crohn's disease.

While at the bottom is a chart that states levels up to 100 is OK from some other sources 50-80 (not over 80) may be better levels for most people. Since Vitamin D3 is actually a hormone as is Insulin some find that people can be Vit D3 resistant and may require much higher levels but one should not do that without a doctor checking other markers so as you do not get too much calcium in the blood. Just because currently it is still over the counter in the USA does not mean it is safe if over used.

    Hi All

Thank you so much for all your information. I will definitely try the food diary to find my triggers which will hopefully improve my general 'unwell' feeling. I really don't like the idea of cutting out a food group but right rikkiatkinson, feeling healthier is def best.
Thank you GaleHawkins for your links..... they are very useful and they make perfect sense to me..... I have previously been treated for Melanoma (thankfully clear now). My consultant tested my Vit D levels a year ago and the results were on the floor. He prescribed 2500iu but I barely remember to take them.... I will definitely change that and ask him to check my levels again:)
    Thanks again
