The sooner you can work out that you can lose weight with out exercise the better off you';ll be. Exercise is great for health but not for weightloss. So i'd stick with walking and keeping busy.

You lose fat from a caloric deficit. Exercise is for health. As others have stated, try swimming.

Agreed about watching your calories and swimming, and I also wanted to suggest mat pilates for toning/strengthening. You're lying down the whole time, so there's no pressure on your feet at all. When I hurt my ankle badly before, it was the only thing I could do.

In addition to a careful diet (I'm having great success on a combination of Grain Brain and Ketogenic, but everyone is different), anything that builds the big muscles will burn some calories. See if you can do bodyweight squats, and once you have built up your legs a little, you can add small amounts of weights, held in your hands (think gallon jug of water in each hand) and try variations like Bulgarian Split Squat, Romanian Deadlift, and tons more you can find on YouTube or Fitocracy.com.

There is an entire world of bodyweight workouts you can do at home that, if you stick with them, will get you miles toward your goal. You may have to be creative to work around your foot injuries until they're healed (heeled? ha ha), but that might be part of the fun.

I've been following Mark Lauren's workouts, and he recently released a book for women who are just starting out, it is called Body by You, and my wife swears by it.

Strength training, rubber bands, pilates, yoga, and ball exercises.

I cannot run at all either EVER and can only do some walking so I had to change how I was going to get into shape.

I have a nasty neuroma on my right foot and do not want to tick off those nerves again. Took months to get it to calm down and a lot of PT.

If you are back in old shoes, I would tell you to see a pedorthist and get shoes that are made for you after surgery. Worth its weight in gold to have shoes that fit you properly.
