Avocado

So I want to put avocado on my salad, but it is 280 calories with 20 grams of fat. I could use half, but don't want to waste the other half. Do you stay away from avocado's while journaling? It sure is a lot of calories! I am at work, but do have some lemons with me. Will that preserve the other half of the avocado do you know? I know they are very good for you.....

Avocado is a great source of fat and fiber. Fat is essential in one's diet. I eat it frequently- I just don't eat an entire avocado. It's hard to prevent avocado from turning brown after cutting it. I suggest keeping it in an air-tight container and put the seed back in it!0

ok thanks. I will try that....0

I love avocados. I don't stay away from them when I am journaling, because I am planning to eat this way for the rest of my life. I have them at least weekly. Yum.0

Leave the seed in the unused portion and leave it in a ziploc baggie or something in the fridge...just cut off a quarter or something.
The exposed edge might get a bit brown but it'll taste fine. Don't expect the cut avocado to last more than a day or two...0 -
Have 1/4 and seal the rest off.0

Agreed- I usually work with a 1/4 at a time, keep the seed in and wrap as tightly as I can with plastic wrap, then put it in the smallest airtight container it will fit in. Or a Ziploc with the air squeezed out. It will 'keep' longer than it will last.0

To store avocado without it turning brown, put it in an airtight container submerged in cold water and store in the fridge.
To answer your other question, I do limit them because they are so high calorie. I eat them occasionally, but not regularly.0 -
They are high in calories, but they are super good for us. Try to enjoy 1/4 or 1/2 of one a day. Save the unused portion in the skin with the seed in a ziploc baggie with as much of the air taken out as possible. It will still brown a little, but tastes fine if you eat within a day or two.0

I will always eat avocados, I love them so. Like others have said, keep the stone in the unused part, wrap tightly in plastic (never foil, nor in a metal container, instant brown), and refrigerate for tomorrow.
Even if it browns a little overnight, it's still good and tasty--like a browned apple slice, it's merely aesthetics.
PS--a tip for storing prepared guacamole--place the stone in it (just on top), lay plastic wrap across the surface of the guac (to keep out air), then cover the container as well. Keeps it pretty looking.0 -
thank you. I will just eat half and not scoop the other half and put it in a baggy. Thanks for the ideas.... I love them on my spinach salads!0

The way to keep them from going brown is to keep the air off them. So anything that helps with that. If you have guacamole you put the saran wrap touching the guacamole all across the top then put the lid on the container.0

I eat first the half with out the seed and leave the seed in the half I store with plastic wrap, wrapped thiglty around and store in the fridge it's still good the next day0

If you are concerned about one avocado in a week, you've got some attitude adjustments to make.0

I usually eat one half at a time and eat the other half the next day (often for dinner and then breakfast to minimize the time in-between). I leave the seed in, squeeze a lemon on it, and put it in a ziplock. It's normally fine later, not brown.0

I eat the whole avocado. I find is so filling that it is worth the count. I usually only count carbs, not fat or calories.0

I used the other half for my veggie sandwich today, and it was just fine. Thanks for all the tips.0

I have 1/4 almost every day0

I eat the whole thing, because I cannot justify letting that poor other half of avocado sit alone in a cold, dark refrigerator.
They're full of awesome nutrients and good fats. MFP sets your protein and fat low, so I don't panic when one sends me way over.
I also recommend weighing them. One avocado I thought was going to be super calorie dense (it was huge) ended up being less than 200 calories for the entire thing. If you're going by generic database entries, your calorie log for it may not be accurate.0 -

I read if you place the half with a cut onion in the same container in the fridge, it'll stay fresh but i haven't tried it.0 -
All the ways you can store a cut avocado and the conclusive best way:

I drip lemon juice over the half I'm going to store, cover with saran wrap, and put it in the fridge.0

I love avocado and eat it often. I suggest weighing the avocado half as sometimes calories on items listed as "1 medium" vs. a weight measurement are often inaccurate. Keep the half with the pit still inside, wrap and throw it in the fridge. It'll keep for a couple of days, add a little lime or lemon if the browning colour is off putting to you, though it is totally harmless.0

You can use lime juice too.
