Is anyone else a 'volume eater'? How to change it?

I keep seeing posts where people say 'just eat the same thing but less of it', or how they pack half their meal at the restaurant etc... It boggles my mind. I'm a volume eater. I need a lot of food, or I get hungry. If I make frozen veggies, I'll typically have the whole bag, for example.
I'd love to be one of those people who can just eat half a sandwich and be full though... but how do you do it?

I am also a "volume eater" as you defined. How I deal with it is I eat only twice a day. Bigger meals.0

Yup, seconding the bigger meals. Once a day if you have to. Also... drink soooo much water while you eat that it's uncomfortable to eat more hahah.1

I am a volume eater as well. I need to feel full or actually not feel it, I need to BE FULL! I eat two meals and one of those meals is the bulk of my daily calories.
My mind just says wait till 4:00 then you can really eat your calories!1 -
Who said you have to change it? If you like volume, then do the whole "eat what you normally do, just less of it" thing and add extra low calorie options to beef up your meal. If you usually have a big hunk of lasagna with garlic bread and a small side salad, have a dinner sized salad, a smaller hunk of lasagna and a smaller piece of garlic bread. Eat the whole bag of steamed veggies with a 5 oz steak instead of 10.
I like my meals to be big and satisfying. I practice 16:8 IF and have lunch around noon, dinner around 6 and a snack after that in the evening. Eating only 3 times per day allows me to have more at each meal and it is much more satisfying for me that way. In the past, when I've tried the 6 mini meals or 3 meals + 3 snacks a day options, I always felt deprived and never felt satisfied. When I practice IF, I find it easy to get comfortably full and usually even leave a little food on the plate. No more eating lunch and feeling like I need more food 2 hours later. I can go 6 or even 8 hours between meals if timing requires it.0 -
Volume eater here too and I still feel like a eat a whole lot of food...just better choices. I'd much rather have a huge salad than half a sandwich. I fill my lunch with lots of cherry tomatoes, cucumber, etc....things that take a while to eat, satisfy the crunch factor and are low in calories.0

I eat a ton of food-- my husband eats about 800 more calories than I do each day and I eat way more food on my plate. I feel so jipped if I don't have a full plate at each meal. I load my plate and my stomach with low calorie, high volume foods.
-at least two cups of veggies with supper every night (lots of broccoli, brussel sprouts, salads)
-rice cakes (and rice cake-like products, veggie straws, etc.)-- two rice cakes with 1 tbsp. of peanut butter or a wedge of laughing cow cheese is very few calories and quite filling
-liquids-- I drink at least 90 oz of water a day, along with coffee and tea
-popcorn- although it's not SUPER filling, you feel very satisfied after eating a whole bag of 100 calorie popcorn. it seems to go on for days.
I am always satisfied after a meal and I eat three full meals a day with one snack on a 1400-1600 calorie/day diet.0 -
smaller plates0

Smaller plates, more water ( drink water, before and after everything) celery is also your friend... ( you can eat so much of it) and then I just eat smaller portions of good/bad for you food0
-
Yeah but that's the thing too, it's rare that I can last more than 4 hours without eating, and that's pretty much only when I eat 800 or more calories.0

portion it out ahead of time0

I bulk my meals with low calorie veggies.
Making chili? Saute grated zucchini with the onions.
Want a steak? Serve with half a plate of steamed veggies.
Making soup? Reduce the meat, add cabbage & carrots cause you can triple the portion.
Want spaghetti? Add 3 cups of kale to the sauce.
Want perogies? Have only 4...sorry there's no way to cut the calories for some things.0 -
I used to be a volume eater as well. I swear I thought I was a bottomless pit. I just slowly started cutting back. It took a while for my body to adjust but it did adjust. One thing that really helped me is I would eat a SMALL portion of something only when I felt hunger pains and then eat another small portion of something again only when I felt hunger pains. I had to teach myself what was hunger and what was boredom, thirst, cravings.0

Well, I eat larger meals and don't snack. It works for me.0

What I've learned from weighing my meals at a restaurant: it's usually 2-3 servings of each food type. I don't have a problem eating half there and taking the rest home. I can spread the enjoyment out another meal/day. Also, I like desserts and prefer to eat the whole slice of pie/cake/whatever.
For me, it depends on what I'm eating as to whether or not I'll feel full after a meal. The "bad" carbs (pasta, rice, potatoes, bread) get me that lovely fullness.0 -
Think I am. I like the process of eating a large plateful of food and feeling full. It gives me the impression im not depriving myself. I can go lot of the day without eating, but when I start then I like to have soemthing worthwhile and thats more than half a sandwich.
If its working for you then id stick with it.0 -
I am not a real volume eater but I can't eat only 2 or 3 times a day... In former times I used (or at least I tried to...) to eat healthy and a couple of hours later I fell for the chocolate and its friends... Now I try to eat more fibres that fill my stomach up such as salad... And when my body starts to think about eating again I started to eat cucumber... On one hand I love it and on the other I won't get fat because of it... I also started to drink fresh herbal tea such as Jasmin Green Tea or Ginger Green Tea. Somehow my stomach gets relaxed and I am not crawling after my fridge immediately...0

I am a volume eater and have accepted that that is the way I am. When I still believed that a person need " three squares " I ate too much and gained weight over the last ten years.
Now I do not eat before 2 pm and eat two largish meals ( that amount to 1200 calories; because I am under 5 feet and going on 70 I don't need more ) that satisfy me before 9 pm. I eat a lot of vegetables , pulses and legumes and find those filling, but also eat a lot of other vegetables. I eat chicken on average once a week as well as fish and easily meet my protein needs with other stuff. I never snacked ( I am from a " no-snack culture ) and finally feel good about the way I eat. I realize that this is my own preference and has nothing to do with science.
Well, thinking about it, it actually does have to do with science, because it has been proven that meal timing and frequency is nothing but personal preference.

I too eat a lot of food. Veggies have become my best friend (I too, eat the whole bag of frozen veggies for a meal). I also eat appropriate amounts of protein and fats for their satiety value. I don't see anything wrong with eating the amount of food you are comfortable with - just make healthy, nutritious, and calorie appropriate choices.

I use smaller plates to make the food more visually stimulating in terms of size and amount and make smaller portions or "item size" when making meals at home. Such as, use smaller potatoes and have 2 baked instead of 1 large (actually is less in weight too having 2 small ones), or I used to love making large homemade ravioli but instead I make them small so instead of 6 ravioli you have 20-22 for the same weight/calories. Tricks your mind to think that you are having more than you are.
For snacks, serve up half of a serving and when finished go get the 2nd half. Your brain perceives that you just had 2 snacks instead of one. The mind is a very powerful tool. Best of luck!

VEGETABLES. You can eat plate after plate of lettuce and cucumbers with lemon juice for only a handful of calories. Bonus: great nutrient- and fiber- rich diet!0

I'm a volume eater. I like being a volume eater. You just have to choose what you eat a high volume of and you'll be fine. These days, I'll eat a half a sandwich/entree/pasta dish, but also a massive salad, fruit bowl, plate of veggies, etc. Low calorie = high volume.
Also, I've cut out most snacking. I will sometimes have a kashi bar in the afternoon so that I can get home without eating my arm, but otherwise, I save most of my calories (800-1,100) for dinner.
Great "high volume" foods (lower calorie) that satisfy: chopped broccoli, feta, tofu, salsa, bell peppers, watermelon, all greens (spinach, chard, kale, romaine, etc).0 -
Veggies. Broccoli is great.
Lastnight for example. I made 400g of steamed broccli, when it was done steaming, took some of that fake butter spray (OMG I'M GONNA DIE, RIGHT????!?!?!) and coated it good, and tossed some of the cheese popcorn powder (0 calories) you can get in Wal-Mart (by the popcorn) and coated it well again. Absolutely amazing.... and I felt like I was pregnant, and not my wife, lol.0 -
I eat slowly. S.O. makes it difficult, though. Spoils me with om noms D:0

I'm a "volume eater," too. I just eat voluminous food. I make my omelets with a crap ton of veggies and sometimes beans in them (mushrooms work well for me, since they have a 'meaty' texture to me). Salads big enough to feed a family (not just sad lettuce--spinach or kale, veggies, beans, chicken breast, corn, etc. ~400-500 cals a pop). And yeah, steamed veggies by the bagful.
I almost NEVER drink my calories (a spot of milk or cream in coffee or tea, and my protein shake--but I even make it with double liquid to make it 'bigger'). I need my precious food, but a warm beverage with a few calories in it can help between meals (for me).
I will always be this way. I always have been, even as a very lean teen and young adult. Sure I can eat 1/2 a sandwich, but it better have a quart of salad and veggie on the side, otherwise it's just an appetizer.

Me too, me too!! If I don't feel full, I feel deprived, and I will eat all the foods.
I do a lot of what other people have been saying here...
Bulk up my meals with healthy, light foods...a lot of times I will have a giant salad with a little bit of lentils and rice, a good amount of protein (chicken, steak, or pork) and 2 cups of broccoli or green beans for dinner. (This comes in at around 500 calories) I usually cannot finish it.
Also, it helps me to wait as long as I can to start eating during the day, because once I've started eating I have a hard time stopping. I can't "snack" because I don't feel full, and keep snacking until I do. I get up at 5am, and don't eat anything until at least 10. Am I hungry? Sure, sometimes...but it is usually 5 minutes or so and I forget.
Another thing I do a LOT (and this doesn't work for a lot of people) but I don't *eat* anything until around 3pm. I drink coffee with skim milk and protein powder. Or coffee with butter and coconut oil. Around 250 cals each, and since I'm not chewing, I haven't wakened the beast. This supposedly has some science to it...I don't know what it is, I just remember reading it somewhere years ago. Something about how the act of chewing and the digestion involved in foods you chew activates areas of your brain associated with hunger.
And...(can you tell I've fought with this a lot, hahaha?) The last thing I do, regularly, is when I sit down to a meal and I feel like I'm starving, or feel that I don't have as much food as everyone else, and know I'm not going to be full...I eat half my food, and then take a break. Keep sitting there with my family, but push my plate away and talk for a few minutes. Then I keep eating. It takes 15 minutes from food hitting your stomach for your brain to register that it has. The "full" feeling we crave comes, if we give it a chance.
Like anything else with weight loss, so much of this is a mind game. You have to find the things that work for you, and use them to your advantage...one thing to realize is that hunger won't kill you. And that what we know as hunger is usually not real hunger. Let yourself feel hungry. What is the worst thing that can happen? Someone else said something about telling herself that it's almost 4, and she can have her real calories then...
Sometimes it's as simple as being uncomfortable for a few days while your mind/body adjusts to a new thing.0 -
I have never really thought of myself as a volume eater. However, I almost never snack and eat a tiny breakfast (typically 200 calories) so I guess I kind of do the "2 larger meals" thing. If I try to eat six or eight small meals throughout my day I feel very unsatisfied and vaguely angry LOL0

Go with it. Fill up on low cal veggies! Your health will sky rocket!0
