Adding Friends to Fitbit

Can anyone help me figure out how to add friends to my Fitbit using their Fitbit id? Mine is only offering me my Facebook friends with a Fitbit, or to add them with an email address. I tried using their Fitbit id as an email address but it keeps rejecting it.

What am I doing wrong? This thing is obviously smarter than I am. LOL.

    Those are two ways, another is if someone shares the url link from their fitbit profile. I find this is easiest to do on the computer, eg, mine is here: https://www.fitbit.com/user/34CHBH
