Sore Toe Running

Just completed week 9, run 1 on a 10k app. Doing it on the treadmill as the weather is too bad to run outside. But I'm having a bit of a problem with the second toe on my left foot! Pain starts toward the end of the run - excruciating! So bad that it feels like I've broken my toe! Pain subsides about 10 minutes after I finish. Any suggestions welcome! I'm wearing good Nike shoes.

Do they fit? Are they laced up appropriately? What age are they? What other training do you do in them?
Notwithstanding the shoes, it might be your gait; heavy on one side?0 -
They fit and are relatively new - I only use these shoes for running or metafit. I have flat shoes I wear for weight training. Might try a specialist shop in town that does gait analysis and see if they have any suggestions.0

Just a thought, do you have Mortons toe on that side?0

Learn something new every day! I had never heard of Morton's toe so had to Google it! Yip - I've got it! My second toe is noticeably longer than my big toe. One website suggested a thin pad under the big toe but I'm not sure how that will help.0

In that case I'd be almost certain that your problem is fit, insufficient space in the toebox. I find my gait on a treadmill lead to my foot slipping in the shoe, and if you've got Mortons then your toe will be bumping against the inside of the shoe through the session.0

Thanks for the advice - will try different shoes this week and see if that overcomes the problem.0

Before you invest in new shoes, can I recommend you try a different pair of socks?
I have long toes and I find that if there is a seam in the toes it can really hurt my feet especially if the seam wedges underneath the toe nail.
Luckily after getting running socks with no seams by the toes I don't have the same trouble. For the sake of about £5 you might fix your problem.
My favourites are karrimor men's running socks (I wear a size 8 shoe and ladies' socks always feel too small), closely followed by nike dri-fit (although weirdly, given the name) my feet feel sweatier in the dri-fit socks.
Good luck!0 -
I have the same problem. I wear a half size bigger running shoe to keep the toe box roomy when my feet swell during the runs. Not so big as to slip around, though. You can buy these great toe covers made of silicon at the drugstore - they are like little condoms that you slide over the toe. They saved my foot!!0
