I'm going to a trade show in LA next week and will be eating out at EVERY meal, not mention entertaining clients in the evenings. Any tips how I can eat within my calories and survive those huge portion sizes!

Thanks

Use what you know so far to make good choices. Focus on items that are veggie/fruit/protein heavy (like eggs and a cup of fruit for breakfast for example). A lot of restaurants in the LA area have healthy choices, and chains have to post their nutritional information. Don't eat the whole plate if it's too big for you, you could always either ask for a box or just not eat it.

If you order salads, be mindful of the cheese, bread/ croutons, and salad dressing. Sometimes the California salads carry huge calorie loads. Pre-log to check calories if you can.

You don't NEED to eat out for every single meal.

If your hotel has a mini fridge (most do), I'd go to the grocery store and buy whatever fits in the fridge…

You can buy greek yogurt and cottage cheese… Eat that for breakfast

Or bagels and a small container of cream cheese. Or english muffins and a small jar of peanut butter.

Buy a bag of salad mix and pre-cut/pre-cooked chicken to toss in the salad. You can buy hard-boiled eggs already made and toss that in too.

There are many ways to avoid eating out for every meal when traveling… even if it means going to the grocery store every day to stock up and using tupperware.

  • From my experience there are good choices of restaurants in the US. Excellent self-service salad bars and then you get to select the size of the steak as well as vegetarians and international restaurants everywhere.

check menu's of the restaurants before you go if you can. It will make smart choices a lot easier when you get there

Oh dear, all I can think of is you gnawing on those little half blind critters.

OP, I travel between Canada, UK, and the USA often and don't have a problem eating out.
Chose things that you would at home, and remember anything left over can be put in a doggy bag until later.
Don't forget you can always ask for something to be prepared different than what is on the menu, and heavy sauces can be omitted.
Get salad with dressings on the side.

Most of all eat within reason most of the time, have fun and enjoy yourself.
    Cheers, h.

Always ask for salads with extras on the side, meals with veges, stir fries, Subway subs for lunches on the go, fresh food takeaways wherever possible.

I always look for the simpler meals on a menu so I can quickly evaluate how much is whole food and how much is processed. Choose whole food where possible!
