Hello, Im an avid hiker who recently gave up Sugar (Jan 1st) and I'm struggling with my energy level while hiking. Any ideas on great sugar free high energy snacks? I currently depend on nuts, string beans, cucumbers and hummus. Thanks for any suggestions. cheers and Happy New Year.

Hmmm, high energy, rapid digestion for exercise without sugar?

    Beer and bread.

We use nuts and Lara bars on our hikes.

If you're not giving up fruit, dried fruit (read labels to make sure it doesn't have any added) can be a good addition to the nuts and veggies.

Make a granola bar. Granola bars are the best for hiking. Lightweight, no spills, etc

I have to have carbs when I'm hiking. Mostly for long day hikes I take peanut butter and jelly on some really good bread. Can you have all fruit jam type spread? I just can't stomach many of the bars anymore.

I second the dried fruit. When I was a cash-poor 20 something, prunes were cheap and easy to carry, so that's what we went with for hiking food! Well, except on early morning hikes, then we ate chocolate covered espresso beans. But I don't endorse those as a breakfast food except for hungover 20-somethings who aren't too fussed about nutrition, LOL.

When I was hiking a lot my go to was an apple with peanut butter. You can get those pacs of Jif-To-Go and throw one in your pack and soak the apples in salt water for a minute or two to keep them from going brown. I always kept something like a granola bar in my pack in case of emergency but usually the apple/peanut butter combo was all I needed - even if I was hiking upwards of 20 miles. The apple provides some quick energy from carbohydrate and the peanut butter burns slow to keep you going all day!

If you like hummus, find a recipe for oven-roasted chickpeas.
Also, you could buy a dehydrator for string beans and similar foods.

Caffeine is the only thing I can think of.

If you've given up sugar and your energy levels are suffering, isn't that a good indication that you should be eating them?

Usually I take coconut water and peanut butter and fruit (banana or apple). Sometimes a pb&j, pretzels, and/or string cheese.
