Decided to hold off on the power meter for now (as HR is a decent fitness gauge), and instead snagged a project bike tonight (cheap $90 wally world thruster 700c fixie) as I'm in flatlands the next few months (Florida), and figure it would be good for guests who want to join me for a ride, or for rides to places where I'm not comfortable locking up my carbon fiber/ultegra thief magnet.
If I can get it tuned up well enough (at 29lb), and my fitness continues to progress, it might be fun to try to keep up on a group-B ride (20mph pace) with it.

My walmart fixie project bike arrived today, so assembled, rode, and found some well reviewed but inexpensive replacements for the crankset & brakes (brakes were awful, crank was plastic). Tires will be next, but for $150 all in (with the replacement tires once the stocks wear out), it'll be a good alternative to my thief magnet for toodling around the neighborhood.

Replaced the brake pads and pedals (now spd/flat) on the fixie, but waiting for the crank puller and new tires to arrive before going to much further on it (as I'm up to 31 miles so far). The weight and non aerodynamic positioning is costing me about 3mph vs my good bike, but at 1/25th the retail price, it is a good toy to have around, I'll feel better locking it up when running errands, and it should work for guests.

I need to start logging outdoor miles. Currently on the trainer as my job and 2 kids keeps me from riding in daylight hours.0

Hello everyone! I am a novice spinner and would love to log in my spin miles here. My target in spinning is 50 km. 15km done already & 35km to go.0

I spin once a week if I can ride for real, twice if I can't. I rode to work a couple of times a week last year, but our office has relocated to a place that will be a difficult ride. Still considering different routes. My latest real ride was a very sloppy 16 mile trail ride this weekend.
I did just over 1000 miles between my road and mountain bikes last year and have set a goal of 1500 for this year.
The highlight of my cycling year is our local Bike MS ride from Cherry Hill to Ocean City, NJ. I've only done the standard 80-mile ride but I keep getting tempted by the Century option. Maybe this year...0 -

My goal for this month is 170 miles.
Don't worry, we don't expect much out of Californians
Clothing is a tough part. If you notice in the pic above, I'm wearing jeans. Yeah, dorky, but effective. On top I've got four layers (which was actually one layer too many)- a t-shirt, a long sleeve tee, a Merino wool sweater, and a windbreaker. I have cycling gloves, but I also have a pair of wool mittens that are surprisingly effective, even in the wind. I do have a balaclava for my head, but I don't need it until the temp gets to about 40*F. When I started riding several years ago, though, I made due with street clothes.
Light? For me, I actually prefer to ride at night. If you look around you can get a good headlight for $50-100 and decent tail light for $25-50. The benefits of riding at night include lighter traffic (maybe not so much if you're in a major city) and, from a distance, if you have good lights you know that cars are going to see you from a long way off, perhaps even better than in daylight.
But if you want to ride indoors, more power to you, I guess.
If you want some good riding tights for not a lot of money check http://zimcoimport.com/. I'm not an employee of theirs, just a very satisfied customer. I bought the unpadded tights and just wear bike shorts under them. They're in their third season and holding up great.0 -
