Menopause and Weight Loss To Hot to Handle?

I am 51 and finally started to take care of myself rather than kids and parents. Let's just say I have a long row to hoe. I started working out 3-4 times a week beginning of December. Felt some changes in curves but no weight loss. Added MyFitnessPal in January and have lost 6 lbs. Good thing, right? I was para-menopausal for 4 years. Haven't had a period for a year and a half now. Survived the occasional hot flashes and mood swings with my rye sense of humor. (no meds). Now that I am losing weight however, the hot flashes are coming on like gang busters. Not just one or two a day, but four a night and more during the day. I was told once, weight loss or gain can cause hormone fluctuations (which causes hot flashes). Anyone else my age dealing with this? Any thoughts? Ideas?

I too I'm going thru this hormones crap .....lol ...
I've been seeing a Naturalpath Dr. and I have been doing the following things and they seem to be helping
I also have fibroids that I'm trying to reduce naturally.
So here it goes:
- NO processed food
- NO dairy
- all meat needs to be antibiotic free if you can do organic even better - very limited meat
- Fish twice a week
- No sugar
- No alcohol- hard one for me as I like my glass of red wine
- No caffeine
- Lots of green veggies
- Need to lose weight - lost 8 pd so far since Christmas
- Exercise daily - to get the heart going
- Yoga daily
- Meditation 15 min daily
Some herbs I'm taking :
DIM
Plus she made a mixture of the following herbs
Burdock
Chaste tree berry
Lady's mantle red root
Wild yam
Yarrow flower
I've also heard of Unicorn root to be very good .

lol... I can totally relate - and I've been trying for two years to find a way to log a hot flash as a calorie burn in "exercise"!!

There are a lot of groups on MFP for women our age; and dealing with the joys of peri/post menopause etc... might be worth checking em out using the search function and some key words... i'll see if I can find a couple of links to some to make it a little easier too in case you're interested....

My hot flashes have been minimal, thank goodness, and they sort of go in spells. I've been on MFP for 19 days and notice most of my flashes in the early evening. I can't honestly say diet has affected them, but what I do notice is that the generalized aches and pains I was beginning to think I'd be stuck with for the rest of my life disappeared within the first week of dieting, and I'm guessing it is due to my cutting out most sugar and refined grains in favor of a very nutrient-dense diet. Apparently what I could get away with when I was young won't fly now that I'm almost 54. I did begin putting weight on immediately after going through menopause at 50, about 30 lbs total, and I honestly believed it was menopause that somehow caused it. Now that I"m getting used to eating light and healthy again, and the weight is coming off, I'm starting to think that somehow at that time I just fell into some very bad habits and didn't realize how differently I was eating. I'm so happy to be on track, and this site, with the social option, is making a huge difference to me.0

Well I am 53 now and no period for about 1 year. Yipeee!!! But I have gained approx 15 extra pounds and I am now trying to lose it. I am eating healthier but only lost about 2 lbs so far. I try to exercise at least 4 times a week. I get hot flashes or night sweats at night about 3 or more. I just try to go with the flow. No hormone med except for a insert for dryness. I am trying to cut back on salt and carbs and only grilling, broiling, baking. But still with flavor.

Well.... I'm on the other side and figure it's just part of life. Did you know that women from different parts of the world/different cultures tend to have menopausal "symptoms" manifest differently? I first discovered this when I was having lots of shoulder stiffness and did some reading. I was surprised to learn that Japanese women often report this as a menopausal symptom.
I can't find the article I learned so much from at that time, but did find one that I will link here which I think is a good read.
Here is an excerpt:
WhileWestern cultures associate menopause with hot flashes, women in other cultures often associate menopause with different symptoms. For example, Japanese women experience headaches, shoulder stiffness and chilliness.2-5Nigerian women list joint pain as their most common menopausal symptom,6 and Filipino women list headaches first and hot flashes last.7 In an early study of 483 Indian women of the Rajput caste in India, Flint found that few women had any problems with menopause other than cycle changes.8 The only symptoms ofmenopause recognized by Mayan women are irregularity and cessation ofmenses, and the end of fertility,9 and Lebanese women report fatigue and irritability.10These different patterns of symptom reporting exemplify the diversity of the menopausal experience.
