I lost a bunch of weight but now my hips hurt while I am sleeping

I read that I need to start doing lunges to build some muscle in my bum to help with the discomfort while sitting on hard chairs. I have noticed when I sleep on my sides that my hips get very sore, is there any hope?

    Bump for answer. Mine have been like this since I had my oldest child.

    Side note, I did notice that when I was doing yoga 2x a week (a few years ago) the pain was nonexistent, so maybe that will help? Anecdotal but it might help.

    Maybe try some hip opening exercises? My hips feel like someone took a hammer to them after I exercise. I have anterior pelvic tilt, so when I do something for fitness it tightens the illiac crest muscles and hurts pretty bad. Opening the hips up helps a lot. This is a great link that helped me.     I get that but I've got health issues so I don't know how helpful I can be. You might try some hip stretches. Also try sleeping with a pillow between your knees.

    If that doesn't help it couldn't hurt to ask your GP, just to make sure everything is okay. And if it's bad enough that you're losing sleep it could indicate a problem that needs to be addressed, either with physical therapy or with further medical attention depending on what's going on.

    Do you mean like, your hips feel uncomfortable because it feels like the bone is digging into the bed? Solutions: adjust the angle you sleep at; get a softer bed; get a memory foam mattress pad (if you blanch at the price--it's worth it, I promise). Or do you mean an actual aching joint? That's probably something to talk to your doctor about.

    I had hip pain for a long, long, long time....everyone said, loose weight, it will go away. It was interfering in my ability to sleep ( I sleep on my sides due to back issues), and my ability to work out (so I was having troubles loosing weight). I finally just kept complaining to my doctor (Navy) and he finally sent me to a specialist. Turns out I had Bursitis in my hips. She offered my cortisone shots but I didn't take them, I couldn't imagine anyone poking me with a needle at the site of such pain!!! I did take the stretching and exercise advice and am really good at following it. Pain is gone and stays gone as long as I maintain good muscle tone and stretch properly.

    Considering you have lost weight I am assuming that you exercised as part of that and you may have overdone it, especially if you were enthusiastic with your workouts. If you have insurance and it won't break the bank I say go to your doctor about it. It might behoove you make notes each day about how the pain is/is different depending on your position (i.e., laying, standing, sitting, etc.).

    You could try sleeping with a pillow between your knees. That can help take the stress off your hips when laying on your side.

    However, if its affecting your ability to sleep, I suggest seeing your doctor.

    Thanks for all the suggestions. I do have an appointment with my doctor next month but I'll check out the hip opening exercises in the meantime.
