So normally I do the elliptical and I burn (according to the site, no HRM...I know) around 315 cal.
Today I did this one, and it darn near killed me. Yet the site says its the same calories burned. It's an hour later and my thighs and butt are still clenching....
So, what would you input this machine in as? It's probably the one I'll use from now on, it's a challenge and I was getting a little bored of the elliptical...

any different exercise you do will make your body sore. its just that you are using muscles in a different way.
i lift weights..and i am pretty strong..but i change up my routine every few months. for example i was doing bicep cable curls for a fwe months..then switched to pull ups. let me tell you, even though i was working the same muscle, i was working it in a different way..and wooo was i sore for a few days after.
doesnt mean you are burning any more or any less..i think things tend to go on your heart rate to judge calories burned.0 -

Thats my favorite elliptical!
Crazy talk. I've been doing it more lately and I just drip sweat. The good thing is it's always empty and it overlooks the pool (I love me some swimmers bodies) There's three types of ellipticals at my gym and I've gone through them all. This seems to be the hardest one.0 -
Invest in an HRM....I was so glad when I did. I was burning way more calories than I thought I was. I think that machine is still an elliptical..but it is a cross training glider. We don't have any at the gym where I go..but I have seen them during travels across the country recently in hotel gyms. Not sure if this was helpful...
Good luck in your journey!!!0 -
I prefer the Arc machine over an elliptical. You should give it a try if your gym has it. Way easier on my knees and joints!0

You could use the calorie count listed on the machine. If it's the kind that doesnt allow you to put in your weight, you need to apply a conversion factor. Most machines assume 150lb and base their calorie count on that. So divide your weight by 150 and then multiply the result by the calorie count on the machine.
513 kcal X 125 lb / 150 lb = 513kcal x 0.83 = 426 kcal
I often use this method when there's not something in the database. I also recommend the HRM.0 -
that looks like a stair master to me!! we have one at our gym here, looks a little different than that though!
Not a stairmaster, it's a form of elliptical. It's called an adaptive motion machine. Think a cross country ski motion. I don't find any of the machines hurt my joints, I'm probably lucky in that. My gym is the Y, it's good, but not a lot of fancy equipment. Your standard wall of treadmills, row of ellipticals and every type of weight machine and free weight you can imagine.
I do have a HRM coming off ebay, we'll see what that says...
And the mathematical equation, you're my hero. But that is a lot of scary looking math!0
