I'm 42, female, started working out 2 wks ago. From housework only status to full on daily workouts. I do walking/run on treadmill 5days a week. Incorporate DVD circuit training/calisthenics and free weights. On 1200 calorie intake provided by MFP. Goal is to lose 20lbs of fat mass or more by March (fitness challenge goes by lose of fat mass). I go between a weight loss of 2-4 lbs daily in the past week. I feel stronger overall. Is 20 lbs of fat mass loss a realistic ggoal by March?

Not really. March is only about 5 weeks away... 4lbs per week is unrealistic.

Unrealistic and unhealthy. You put it on slow, you should take it off slow.

You lost 2-4 lbs per day in the last week? No way, sorry. Are you overweight/obese? If you have a lot of weight to lose and you've ditched a high sodium diet, you may have dropped 5-10 lbs of water weight at the beginning.

    How is that determined?

    March is 5 weeks away.

If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lb/week is ideal
If you have 15-25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lb/week is ideal
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lb/week is ideal

I don't know what your end goal is, but use the above and multiply by 5 weeks to determine how much weight you can lose in 5 weeks.

Oh that is a great reference thank you! And thank you for helping me understand more. The person at the fitness center asked me what my goals are and I wasn't sure what I should aim for as far as how my assessment went. My weight fluctuates between a difference of 229lbs-232lbs. My first realistic goal is to break 200 lbs which I haven't done since I was a teenager and I am going for an overall lifestyle change on top of this fitness challenge. I have 3 kids. One in college, 2 in high school. I would love to get healthier so I'm around when the grandbabies come. I appreciate your comments and welcome any more. Thank you!

Thank you for the wake up note...I had no clue. I started on Jan. 12th at 233lbs.
