Getting More Potassium

Looking at my diet, I have realized that I consume too much sodium and not enough potassium. I am slowly working on cutting back on sodium but am having a lot of trouble meeting even just half of the recommended daily value of potassium regularly. Any ideas on how to increase potassium intake? (other than eating bananas, potatoes, etc.).

I take a potassium supplement because I have blood pressure issues. But beans and most legumes, as well as dark leafy greens are great potassium sources. This site has a good chart: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09355.html .

I use a salt substitute that has potassium instead of sodium.
  • what is the name of the substitute that you use??

I believe it is called, Morton salt substitute. I found it in the spice section, next to the table salt.
  • thanks...I need more potassium as well..

Hey! This is something that is a bit of an issue for a lot of us! The first thing you need to be aware of is that ALOT of the foods listed here on MFP don't have any value listed for potassium. It is a bit of a hassle but I started investigating anything that popped up with a zero and then adding the value to it. So now most of the foods I eat on a regular basis are already changed.

Anyway, most foods have a decent amount of potassium in them. All meats and veggies have a pretty good amount. I guess the goal with targeting nutrients is to find quick, convenient low calorie foods you can add in easily without having to make really strange meals. Or to find things that meet multiple needs so you can make the calories count.

That being said there are several things I have incorporated into my diet specifically with potassium in mind. The first thing is an all around super food: Prunes. Eating 4-6 prunes a day gives me potassium, fiber, vitamins, antioxidants. And they are yummy!

The second thing I have added is coconut water. A cup of coconut water only has 42 calories, but packs 485 mg of potassium!! (To compare, a medium banana has 110 calories and 450 mg of potassium.) I really love the taste now, and try to get fresh coconuts when I can :)

Tomatoes are a great source, as are most beans, so any dishes you make combining these will be a winner.

Oh yeah, the last thing I'll mention now - didn't really have to add it, I LOVE THIS - is okra. Some people think its gross, but I love okra in every way you fix it. If you boil it plain then it is only 19 calories for 8 pods, and you get 115 mg of potassium, a gram of protein and 2 grams of fiber! The thing is though, a LOT of veggies have good amounts of potassium in them, just find your favorites!!

This is the best thread I have ever found about potassium. The Original Poster includes a good list in the forum, but then in a second post also gives a link to an exhaustive PDF that gives you all the potassium related information you could possibly want to know. Check it out:

The first two things I am going to do is get some coconut water and look for that salt substitute!

Spinach and sweet potatoes are VERY high in potassium.

    Coconut water has a lot.

Isopure zero carb whey protein has a lot as well.

I'm in the uk and i don't think i've ever seen one of our labels listing potassium, so if your seeing a brit's entry then that could be why no potassium. I wouldn't even have a clue how much a person should be having.
