So......
I've started going to the gym and working out for the first time in a LONG time this week. I went 4 times and worked out for about 45 minutes each time. I assumed that I was working at a high enough intensity (for a beginner) since I had sweat pouring off of me. (Gross!!) My job keeps me active, constantly moving around and doing something. Usually the only time I'm sitting is on my lunch break. So at the end of the day I'm pretty exhausted between my job, the gym, cleaning house, cooking dinner, and getting mine and my daughter's stuff ready for the next day. I'm in bed by 9.30-10 pm waking up at 5.45am.
I've been taking these vitamins the last 4 weeks: A mulitvitamin, Fish Oil, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin D, B-12, Dhea
I feel like I'm drowing in fruit and veggies. I eat fruit for breakfast, a healthy salad with no dressing for lunch, and have been living off of grilled chicken (no salt or butter added), and grilled veggies for dinner. I drink easily my 8 glasses of water alone at work and then I drink easily 4 more at a minimum when I go home. If I snack (which I try not to do too much of) I'm snacking on carrrots, apples, and even peanuts (which I hate) for my protein.
I know this is just starting out. I know that it can be a slow start to losing weight....but I'm concerned with why the scale is going up? It's not significant, like 10+ pounds, but it went up about 3 to 4 pounds and has maintained that number. I'm trying to not get fustrated since I'm just started out...again.
So I guess I'm wanting to know, is there something about what I'm doing that would cause this? Is it my vitamins, not enough water, still too much salt, not enough exercising or what? Any help would be appreciated!

It's completely natural when you start working out to put on weight. Honest!
I blogged about it a while ago,
http://weightwars.wordpress.com/2011/03/10/exercising-and-gaining-weight/
hope you find it useful.
I link in to an article which talks about a 3-4 lb gain over 2 weeks. x0 -
It sounds like you are exercising a lot, and the food you are eating is VERY low calorie. How many calories are you consuming in a day? You may not be eating enough to sustain yourself which can actually slow weight loss. Also... time of the month can add a few pounds for a few days/week. It doesn't sound like too much sodium and definitely enough water and exercise...0

Totally normal for just starting out. Your body retains water when you begin an exercise program!
Also, 45 minutes 4-5 times a week is PERFECT!!!! It's what I recommend for most of my clients! Great job and keep it up! Be sure to eat back all of your exercise calories, as well.
Good luck and keep us posted!0 -
So I feel like I just went through what you're going thru about 2 weeks ago. I stepped up my workouts and gained weight. Talk about frustrating!! I actually cried at one point.
But this week is soo different. I haven't stepped on the scale b/c I'm trying to focus on how my clothes fit versus the number, but my clothes are loose and I feel so much better.
I would say keep up the workouts, keep doing what you're doing and you'll get over that hump. I have a theory that our muscles hold onto water when we freak them out...therefore the weight gain. I've heard this before and it kind of makes sense.
It sounds like you're doing everything else right!

Give your body some time to adjust to all the changes you have made. Keep up with everything your doing.
Are you weighing/measuring your food? It is very easy to eat larger portions then we should.0 -
Thank you everyone for your replies!
I went back and reviewed my food diary, and my average amount of calories consumed is about 1000-1100. Some days more (like 1200) some days less (900).
I am trying to measure and keep careful track of the quantity that I intake since I know how easy it can be to over eat even if it is healthy.
I'm hoping that it is what you guys are saying...just normal for this to happen!!0 -
HI,
That is totally normal that you gain, you are losing fat but gaining muscles. You will eventually start seeing a difference. It happened to me over my year of losing 65 pounds, the scale isn't my friend but the fact that i went down 4 dress sizes was my proof. So i definately didn't loose faith.... Keep up the great work and never let yourself down :0) good luck0
