Question about first week on a diet

I have just completed my first week on a fairly lax diet two days ago. I have lost 5 lbs in this week alone. I have weighed myself every day since week one weigh in and it is not a fluke. I am slightly concerned this is far above what the recommended average is, and on my frame, 5 foot 1 inch petite, appears to be a good deal of weight. I only have 15 lbs to lose before I begin maintaining and muscle building more seriously so it seems like too much. I know this may sound like a braggy question but I am wondering why did this happen? Is it safe?

  • I am eating a very healthy Mediterranean inspired diet. A ton of healthy fats, fish, lean meats, nuts and vegetables.

5 lbs the first week is typical. Next week, it won't be so much.

It's probably mostly water weight you've lost. Very common to see quick losses at first, and I don't think you need to be worried.

A big loss on the first week weigh-in is common. It's because our bodies have a bit of glycogen stored up for quick use, which gets depleted quickly when we are in times of "famine." Keep in mind that this weight tends to return when you start eating at maintenance, so you will probably see a 3-5 pound increase in weight when you start maintaining. That's also normal. If you're set on the number, go slightly lower than goal so you bounce back up to the middle of a range weight you set for yourself.
  • Thank ya'll so much for the information. Just attempting to build my body in a healthy way.
  • Hi, I've been on dieting/exercising for 7 days. I stepped on the scale (weighing once a week) this morning and lost 5.5 pounds. My scale is accurate. As others have said its normal to lose a bigger amount the first week. Good luck on the rest of your weight loss journey.
