KNOCKED UP

One of the main reasons I started on my fitness transformation was because my husband and I knew we wanted to start a family, and at the size I was (HW 367) I knew complications were very likely.

So I got to my lowest of 275 back at the end of Decemeber. Over the past month I have gained 8lbs with no obvious change in my diet or exercise. It was driving me absolutely insane!

So a couple days ago I took a test, or 3, and they came back positive. While I am undoubtably excited about the news, a part of me is worried about the weight gain. I've dedicated a year to losing close to 100lbs and in a matter of weeks to gain so much, it's rough mentally.

My doctor had given me the ok to lose weight while pregnant, preferably no more than 1lb a week, so I'm not trying to hear "quit being vain. Do what's best for the health of your baby" or anything like that.

Mostly I was just wondering about women who have been in the same situation. Did you bloat up like a blimp not long after you found out? Did it go away? What did you do that helped you succeed in losing weight while pregnant?

Just as some background, I eat 1800-2000cals a day usually. Weight train 4-6 days a week.

I appreciate any helpful advice you all have :)

I would suggest focusing more on moving your body at this point than a calorie deficit.

Check with your doctor before starting any exercise, but just getting out and walking can help keep a deficit.

1800-2000 calories is a very doable goal. I find it easier to aim for a lot of whole foods that are nutrient dense, which allows me to fit in smaller portions of a treat that I'm craving.

I am super lazy, so I batch cook huge meals on the weekend, portion them out in single servings and freeze to have during the week. I'll cook 10lbs of chicken breast in a crockpot with some basic spices, shred and then use in other things. I can mix it with BBQ sauce for a pulled chicken sandwich, top a salad with it, mix it with mayo/mustard/greek yogurt (whatever your preference) for chicken salad, use it for tacos, etc. Endless possibilities.

Congrats! And as long has you have your doctor's approval, focus on moving as much as possible. Be active. Keep lifting. Walk A LOT. Stretch. No need at all to "eat for two'. It's the QUALITY of your food that matters; NOT the quantity. You can absolutely be in better shape after this pregnancy than when you started. Be health-conscious and listen to your doctor. Best wishes!

I just had my baby 2 weeks ago. Previous to pregnancy I lost 58 lbs using MFP, so I get where you are coming from.

I'm 5'2 and prepregnancy was 155 lbs. I gained 24.2 lbs, which for my BMI was a healthy gain. Generally I ate 2000-2200 calories a day, swam 3x a week, plus did a prenatal swim class 3x a week.

I'm 2 weeks postpartum and I've lost 13.4 lbs of the 24.4, so I have 10.8 lbs left at this moment to get back to my MFP/prepregnancy weight.

I will say this, pregnancy is weird with weight gain. Some weeks, the gains don't make any sense whatsoever. I know your plan is to lose weight, with your DR's ok, but keep it in mind that you may not actually do that. I don't feel I ate enough to constitute 24 lbs (though it's too early to say what I'll retain since I'm only 2 weeks pp), especially with exercise. But that's the way the cookie crumbled. So if you find yourself gaining instead of losing, don't despair. It is what it is. You can always refocus your weight loss after baby comes. But, that doesn't mean it won't mess with you mentally. It's was a huge mental fight with myself some days. But I'm happy with how I ended and since I want to hit my ultimate goal weight, I know I'll lose whatever I did gain, however long it takes.

I wouldn't worry about that 8lbs you gained - when you're pregnant, your blood volume pretty much doubles! So just keep doing what your doctor recommended :) Congrats on the pregnancy!
