I'm assuming that your school doesn't have a nutritionist on staff if you are looking for this answer on your own. Based on my small understanding of nutrition and athletic performance, I don't think you should worry about this while you are in season. You will need a certain amount of food to keep you performing at peak levels. With the number of practices and games that are scheduled each week, you probably have to eat a lot just to keep your energy levels at the correct amounts.
Once the season has concluded, you just have to be sure that you are in a calorie deficit in order to lose weight at the rate you want to lose it. Make sure you keep in mind that you will need to fuel your body for any offseason activities also, so make sure you at least eat back the calories that you burn during those activities.0 -
as a former college athlete & current coach of age group kids/high school programs, i would highly advise against trying to lose weight while in season...if you are looking to enhance performances/quicker recovery/better stamina, make small changes in your diet to include nutrient dense whole foods and stay away from processed foods. instead of the mid-afternoon pick me up (calorie rich latte, candy bar, processed snacks), grab an apple and a stick of string cheese or half a handful of almonds. also remember hydration is extremely important! keep drinking lots of water and cut out the other sugary drinks.
these small changes will help dramatically with performance!
once your season is over...evaluate your motivation to lose weight - better performance, increased muscle/toning/strength...then have fun! attend a workout class, go for a run with friends, play ultimate frisbee on the lawn...or meet up with your strength trainer for some one on one sessions. good luck!

Definitely agree! I wasn't a basketball player, but most athletics are similar and I was a competitive martial artist for several years. Don't try to make any drastic changes while you're in season. I did all of my changes during off-seasons, like losing a little weight or building additional muscle. In-season, it's just about maintenance.0 -
Doesn't your school have a strength & conditioning coach or performance nutritionist? Most colleges should at least have the S&C.0
