Running shoes - miles

So when I got fitted for my running shoes, the salesman told me they should last 200-300 miles.
Easy enough.
The question I have is, are all miles created equal? For example, road miles vs. Treadmill and eliptical miles.

for the most part...but that's also why there's a range of 200-300 miles...they'll probably be on the lower end if you run on the road or do a lot of trail running...they'll probably last a little longer if you primarily work indoors on a machine. If you lift weights in them, they won't last long at all....0

Could you explain that last part about lifting? I did not know that...0
