I'm thinking of joining a slimming world group (UK) is this a good choice?

So I'm thinking of joining slimming world for motivation and inspiration, does anyone know what it's like? I'm sure each group differs around the country but in general is it a good move. It's just they are cheaper than weight watchers and I'm watching the pennies at the moment

It's a philosophy
But just another way to count calories
Are you sure you need to? Can't you just log your food?
I did it in the dim and distant and lost but it taught me nothing of portion control so when I stopped I put it back on ...that was years ago, it may have changed0 -
It's more for motivation really. Like if I know I'm gonna be weighed every week it will make me determined to weigh less every week. I think in some ways losing weight is hard when doing it alone but if I'm in a room full of people who want the same thing that's got to be motivating, right?0

I've done it three times and lost weight all the times, but could never stick it to it - it didn't suit me. But some people do very well on it.
It's a while since I've been so it may have changed, but the kind of foods you would usually snack or overeat on are limited (bread, cereals, sweet stuff, snacky foods, etc.). You are supposed to eat a certain amount of fibre, dairy, etc. every day, for health. When I last went there was a choice between using portion control on your plate, or the old "red" and "green" days (red was free lean protein/meat, but limited carbs. Green was free of the allowed carbs, but limited meat, etc.). In the really old days there were some odd free foods, such as tinned macaroni cheese! More recently, Muller Lights were free - I don't think I ever want to see one again!
The classses had a weigh in, and sometimes a demonstration/presentation, and we'd go round the group - there were prizes for slimmer of the week.0 -
I have done WW in the past - to be honest I find logging on MFP has been just as successful for me and it's free! There are some support groups here on the forums (look in the motivation section) where you can log your weight each week to reach a certain goal. If you make "friends" with people on here you can chat daily to help each other too.0

Hmmm...maybe it's not for me then. Because I'm not really looking to follow a food plan or anything. I'm quite happy with what I eat already and I'm doing the 5:2 on and off. I only wanted to go to a group for motivation, make some slimming buddies...thanks for the info!0

Here are some great links that got me started. Good luck on your journey.

MFP is cheaper....0 -

But here's the thing: You're not going to lose weight every week. You're just not. (For the first several weeks, sure. But there's going to come a week where you're going to gain water weight while you lose actual weight or where your fat decides to just hang in there until it whooshes off. You might even gain around your period.) Do you want to be in front of a crowd when it happens? Also, unless you weigh first thing in the AM after using the restroom, it won't be accurate.0 -
Why not just use MFP?
It's.... you know... free... and it works...0 -
I've heard mixed stories about joining slimming groups. People say the best part about it is having support from other people losing weight as you are, but those that have lost weight (that I knew) gained a lot of it back afterwards. It was just too hard to stick to long-term.0

Hi!
I'd really recommend it - I go every week and have made some excellent friends there. I don't follow the SW plan but I did to begin with and lost the initial stone really easily - then it got much tougher, and now towards the end of my journey I know I can't do it without firm calorie control. This has to be kept secret from my SW consultant as she doesn't approve but despite the tension of that I find it worth going to group. It's the public weigh, the certificates, the celebration of your success, the laughter and tears - I need it all. MFP is great and my new friends on here are great but the weekly meeting is so important to keep me on track, pick up tips, and feel committed to it all. The diet plan is really lovely but it takes a lot of work with planning and cooking and the unhealthy things are extremely limited, too limited for me.0 -
Hi I recently joined slimming world and I've lost 12 lbs in three weeks. Lost 7 first week, 6 the second week but put 1 lb on the third week (it was a family birthday that week) but now I'm determined to lose again this week. MFP may be free, but with Slimming World I feel u get the support that is really important to weight loss. So yeah, if u can go for it (and it's even easier now they scrapped the red and green choices). Best of luck in whatever you choose to do0

Thanks everyone, I went to my first class. Didn't enjoy it very much and haven't learn much from it, but I will try again next week0
