I just got a fitbit. I made sure to get in 10,000 steps today.
Has anyone started walking 10,000 steps a day & see weight loss?

I go for 10,000 steps a day on mine as well. I have lost weight, but I don't think it is because of the fitbit. It is because of the calorie counting. I actually quit losing for a short time after I got it because I was eating back part of the calories given to me for the steps. So, now I just try to ignore the extra calories allowed. I like my fitbit, and it does give me an incentive to get up and move around, especially if I only need a few hundred more steps to reach my goal!!0

I have lost weight since I bought mine - it has definitely made me more aware of how little I used to move and gives me extra motivation to do more so I'd say it has helped me lose weight - but I do also calorie count. I also don't eat back all of the calories it says I've earned as an extra - a couple of hundred maybe but not more than half.0

I had my first 'normal' day today since buying my Fitbit a couple days ago(read, not deliberately slothful over the weekend) and I clocked over 15,000 steps! Woo! having it makes me want to move!0

I think that using any kind of pedometer really makes you aware of how much or how little you move, and also tells me that there is a massive difference between people and their level of daily activity.
Personally, I started using a pedometer last week for the week and discovered that most days I only clock around 4000 steps, but on days when I went for a long walk with the dog or went out food shopping or to do other activities like for a walk around the market I could reach 10,000 steps, which in turn = calorie burns.
I have always said that I am truely sedentary because I work from home and although I have stairs in my house I didn't think I really moved around much (even after several trips up and down daily) and I was right.
This has also made me suspect that the online TDEE calculators based on sedentary are not very accurate because someone who clocks 10,000 steps due to normal daily activity and someone else like me who is a lot more sedentary can have a huge difference in their sedentary TDEE and therefore the calories they need to eat in order to lose weight.
My weight loss has been quite slow, as I've been working on a TDEE of 1550 which has been given to me by online calculators and I've subtracted what I need in order to lose 1.5lbs per week.
In reality I've found that I am losing at a slower rate, though I've been sticking within the numbers and this could be due to my TDEE being massively overestimated. The MFP sedentary TDEE tells me it's 1650 which I know is way above my maintenance calories in reality, and they are probably more like 1400 so therefore this means that in order to lose weight I need to eat a lot less than others.

I have the vivofit with the red bar and it has made a huge difference for me. Prior to it I really hadn't realized how inactive I was at work. I have a desk job but I have the ability to get up and walk often but I never did really. I would just go home after work kill myself with some Insanity and thought that was enough. Then I read an article with all the reasons why sitting for long periods of time is bad for you and I started walking. I average about 12K a day. About 7-8K by the time I am done with work. Then Insanity usually gives me another 2-3 and then I add on another 2-3 after dinner to try and hit 12K. I was in a huge weight loss plateau for about 2 months and ever since I added in the steps it's jumpstarted my losses again. If you incorporate it into a good diet and workout plan it really can make a huge difference in your losses.0

I have a fitbit one, found it invaluable in seeing how much I do or don't do. It seems to be more accurate than wrist devices. I never thought I could do 10,000 steps/day. I started with 5,000. Then graduated to 7,000 then 8,000. Now 5 out of 7 days I can do 10,000. When I can do that everyday I will increase it to 12,000.0

I got my Fitbit for Xmas and I do about 14,000 steps on my busiest days, and 10,000 on my normal days. I know I walk more in the Summer too, so my average steps will probably be around 18,000 then i reckon. My 3 year old hates the cold so we haven't been out walking as much as we usually do.
I've not become more active since having the Fitbit, so I can't say the walking is making me lose weight, as this is my usual activity level. I go to the gym 5/6 times a week too.
I'm curious about how many steps I'll do at work when I go back after maternity leave. I'm a teacher and it's rare I sit down.0 -
I have had a fitbit for a year, it has been a great motivator. I keep increasing my step goal to challenge myself. I have lost weight with it, but you have to put in the work, not just wear it and expect magical things to happen. It is a tool that can aid in weight loss when used correctly. I've lost 45 lbs in a year, due to moving more and watching what I eat.0

I've had one for about 2 years and average over 10,000 steps 6-7 days a week. I haven't lost weight. I assume I'm not eating at a deficit.
It's great to know how active you are. Just make sure it's set right for integration with MFP. Ie you don't want to get "credit" for the activity twice.0 -
i make it a point to walk to and from work every day no matter how horrific the weather is (like today) which equates to probably around 11,000 steps (5 miles). i think it helped keep my weight off all this time. of course it's all about a calorie deficit, but i could eat more by doing this and still have a deficit.0

I have had a fit bit for 2 years now. It is a fantastic motivator to get me to move more.
Exercise helps, but losing weight is mostly about eating less calories than your body uses each day.0 -

This. Weight loss is all about a calorie deficit, but it can encourage you to be more active. When I first started tracking steps ($5 pedometer), I was getting about 3000 steps a day. I now walk 11,000 steps on a slow day and over 20,000 on busy days. I like the encouragement to get more steps, and I'm rather competitive whether it's with myself or my friend's list.
That said, if I eat too much, I don't lose.0 -

I have the Up24. It's a bit generous in its calculation, but since it goes on the wrist, it's also a bit under-representative if my wrist is still (pushing a grocery cart, carrying something in that hand, etc.
Still, it gives me a better picture of how much I am doing than not using it would give, and I have added some steps in to my day. Not enough for my purposes (and I don't meet the 10,000 step goal very often), but there is some progress.
Overall, I'm confident even my 3500-5000 steps a day is making a difference, based on past experience and the trends I see when I am not getting even that many steps.0
