Self Control

Hi there! I am trying to get back into shape and need to stay on track. I love cooking but hubby and toddler aren't the greatest motivators for eating healthy. It's always "what's easiest" or "what's fastest". I need to get out of that rut. I am interested and consciously trying Paleo, I recently donated all our non-Paleo friendly dry goods to the local food pantry. I try to cook healthy at home but I keep slipping up when I'm out and about. Any tips on self-control?

  • I battled that at first when I started eating healthy. I would slip up here and there but it becomes a mindset mostly. I keep in mind how hard it will be to work off those bad foods and I've found it that the better and cleaner foods I eat, the better I feel about myself, I stick to salads and constantly think about how hard it'll be to work off the bad foods.

I would suggest that self control might be easier if you didn't choose such a restrictive diet.

If you really want to make a lifestyle change, then get your partner on board. You will give you're little one the best start in life with a good quality diet.

Moderation is the key - everything in moderation is fine.

    Goodluck

Also, there's nothing wrong with trying Paleo. But are you only trying because you're still thinking it's "easiest" or "fastest"?

    I have a few tips.
    1. I honestly have no self-control so that means that I just don't have anything at all in the house that is tempting. Nothing at all. So if a craving is strong enough I have to go to the store and buy it.
    2. My girlfriend eats junk food and fast food like there was no tomorrow. I have to plan ahead or I will fall... I have to keep healthy things on hand for myself so that as she is eating her junk food I can eat something else so that I don't feel deprived. My "treats" are generally fruits like berries or apples, protein cheesecakes (proteinpow.com), protein bars, or coffee. I LOVE coffee.
    3. I do all the cooking. I don't let my gf cook so that I can control meals.
    4. When we go out I look at the menu online and choose what I am going to order beforehand.
    5. I eat giant spinach salads with some kind of protein. I use balsamic vinegar or salsa as salad dressing. These salads fill me up and the protein helps me stay full. The balsamic vinegar has a lot of iron in it too.
    6. Protein shakes are great for my sweet tooth. (I do vanilla whey powder with a banana and a tablespoon of PB2. Blend it with a fair amount of ice and a little almond milk and it is AMAZING!)

Have you thought of trying to get the rest of the family on the same eating habits as you?
Although I think paleo is a extreme and unnecessary, if you are wanting better eating healthy in general it really helps when you aren't the only one doing it. I do all the cooking too because I prefer home cooked food and knowing what is in my food. As for eating out, go for main dishes.

I think will power (self-control) is overrated. The easier the change, the more likely I am to keep doing it.

Here's my blog on the subject.

Self-control is easily exhausted, but there are ways you can exercise it over time to make it stronger.

In the meantime, how about finding "easy" and "fast" paleo treats for your lovely family? You may have to prepare and freeze to stay ahead of the game.
