Hi I'm just wondering if cooking unflavored gelatin/agar(WITHOUT adding any other ingredients like sugar etc) but adding 1 litre of water is healthy for snack as it is low in calories/fats etc?
Or is there a better alternative.

On the nutrition label, it states that the calories per serving is 38 and the packet is 10g. So i presume one packet is 38 calories?

Thanks!! :)

http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/3339 says that dried agar is 306 calories per 100g, so 38 calories for a 10g packet seems about right.

As for eating it - well, it sounds terrible, but it won't -hurt- you.

Why don't you use sugar-free flavored gelatin? Unflavored gelatin is generally used in cooking to achieve a certain texture, not as a stand-alone snack.

You can make your own sugar free jelly or jello as you call it over there. Just add fruit flavoured tea of choice/ other sugar free flavouring you fancy or pure juice and whatever sugar free sweetener you like if it's not added already in the above and you have virtually the same thing as you buy from the supermarket but you have more control on what is in it. There is a resonable bit of protein in gelatin and no fat or carbs for few calories so this is a good snack if you flavour it.

Food is a better alternative. You have a relatively small amount of weight to lose so you should have MFP set to lose .5 pound a week with that along with any exercise calories there should be plenty of room to eat real food

Some folks like to add unflavoured gelatin powder to a drink like tea in the evening as a supplement. It's not that uncommon. They even sell it in the supplement store here for that purpose. There's a specific brand I'm looking for so I can make my own sugar free jello, but I'll probably have to buy it from Amazon.

I prefer stevia to the aspartame that's in the Jello in the store. So far I've been using the Knox Gelatine packets and make up a batch of jellies with liquid stevia and tea for flavouring. I made one that was flavoured with pureed and strained frozen raspberries, Raspberry Zinger tea, extra hibiscus flowers, and stevia. It was so delicious and looked just like that cranberry jelly that's so common at Thanksgiving time.
A couple weeks ago, I made some with "Mojita" (Lime mint coconut) flavoured Kevita (it's a probiotic drink - very refreshing) and a couple tablespoons of pure lemon juice. Wow!
This week, it's chai jelly made with almond coconut milk and chai tea.

I have had weak and brittle nails and hair pretty much all my life. I have to say, I'm impressed with how nice my nails are looking since I've been eating the gelatin!

Why??? You don't have that many calories to work with, why waste them on that stuff?
