    I've always heard/read that spicy foods, hot peppers, etc. were good for a diet. I've never heard the opposite.

    The capsaicin in chiles--especially anchos and hatch chilies--boosts my mood incredibly. A real life happy meal!

    1) Talk yourself slim.
    I know some people thing the whole mindful thing is cliche but it can make a huge difference for people who just shove food in their face without considering their choices...not just the type of food but how much they're eating.

    2) Don't hang out in the kitchen.
    Maybe...I only hang out in there when people are stopping in for a quick visit since that's where our main entrance is.

    3) Stash your Cheerios.
    I could see this more as an overall principle, not just for cereal. If you've got something out in sight that's tempting, it's better to put it away. Out of sight, out of mind.

    4) Avoid 'fat tables' when eating out
    I have never heard of this but I guess it makes sense if you eat out a lot.

    5) Ditch your partner
    I'm on the fence with this one. I've had some diet/fitness partners that were horrible and I used their lack of motivation as an excuse for my own failures. However, I've grown up and realized it's on me whether or not I have a partner. It's nice to have someone to share the experience with, you just can't let their actions be a reflection of yours.

    6) Create a diet station on Pandora
    Sounds like hooey but I'm sure it would work for some.

    7) Weigh yourself a lot, and always on Wednesdays
    I agree with regular weighing. Those who have emotional reactions to fluctuations just need to get over it and realize these things happen. As long as the overall trend is downward, that's all that matters. When I did WW, our weigh in was Tuesday and that helped me stay on track over the weekend.

    8) Reach for spicy, strong smelling food
    Sure, but not for the reasons they give. Don't just think HOT spicy, thing spicy as in herbs. Your food should still taste good and smell good!

    This makes sense. If you put enough hot sauce on your food, you can actually render it completely inedible, thus avoiding the calories that would've been consumed.

    what have you always been told? why should food and eating healthfully be bland and boring?

    For MSN, these made sense to me including #8.

    I have found that since focusing on becoming more healthy, I've upgraded my cookbook stash to include much more diversity in flavors than before (think Persian, Levant, traditional Chinese, plus single-ingredients like nuts and seeds). It's more tasty and more fun than just the same-old IMO, and it's MUCH easier to adapt already-healthy recipes to meet my health and nutrition goals than trying to sub cauliflower for mac 'n' cheese..
