Menopause and Weight Loss

Hi. I lost 5 pounds right before Jan. 1st. Hooray. I lost the weight right away...I think it was water weight from a medicine I was taking that I no longer take. I have been tracking and tracking and have stopped losing weight. I am consistently below the calories MFP allows for me. I exercise 3 plus times a week. I am 138 lbs. at the present time but would love to lose 8 more pounds. I am stuck. I'm told that woman who have entered menopause store belly fat (which is my only real problem). I am an active 51 year old. Am I just not being patient enough? I guess at this point I'm wondering if this works. I am using it in conjunction with my Fitbit Flex. Any knowledge or encouragement would be appreciated. If I stick with this, am I going to lose the weight? Thanks in advance.

HI - I went through the menopause last year and my weight loss just.....stopped. Didn't go up, or down. Just halted. The good news is I kept on eating healthily and it has started to come off again in recent months, slowly at first but now picking up a bit. I think its something to do with hormones - I'm 51 too and I've noticed that I've definitely changed shape since going through the menopause, a bit thicker around the middle even though my overall weight stayed the same. Just glad to have come out the other end of it relatively unscathed although I still have the occasional 'personal summer'.....good luck, keep going and you'll see its worthwhile in the end.0

I hear you! I am 60--but have been very fit and trim all my life. I exercise several times a wk--and in the summer I cycle 75-100 miles a week--but stuggle loosing weight. I want to loose about 15 lbs. I am just starting to track--so I am hoping this will help me. My doctor says menopause causes your normal hormones to slow down and thereby your metabolism slows down. You have to do different things to trick your body into loosing weight. Good luck.0

I'm 48 and have been at the menopause thing for a couple years now. I'm definitely thicker around the belly and it's a place I NEVER used to store fat, especially as a "pear" shaped woman. Hips yes, belly no. I am on testosterone therapy which has helped, but my GYN basically says, get used to it. I won't get used to it, but I suspect it will take a while before the 70 pounds I need to lose comes off. I was shocked at how quickly it went on despite regular exercise. For what it's worth, the last ten pounds are the hardest for everyone regardless of age and hormones.0

Oh thank you so much. You all made me feel better. I neglected to mention that I am only 5 foot and that every pound makes you look so heavy. I'm not giving up but yikes it is so hard. Thanks again for your support!

just happened to see this post in the recent discussions.. thought I'd pop in to just let some of the newbies know there are a couple of groups on this site for women dealing with the challenges of being peri/post menopause while losing our excess weight.
I'll dig up some of the links in case any of you want to check some out.. it can be a little overwhelming figuring out how to find stuff at first lol, and it can be helpful for some having others around who have been there/done that and got the t shirt (or the hot flash lol)
Welcome to MFP ladies!
I'll come back and edit this post as I find the links .... there are probably a lot more as well but a few to start you off if interested

These are just a few of them, but if you use the search feature with various keywords for whatever you're looking for (i.e., women; 50; etc you will find others too!
