you're definition of vegetable is incorrect.
Peppers aren't veggies either.
Tomato / tomahto
no- a fruit is seedy part of the reproductive unit of a plant.
Peppers- carry the seeds. So do tomatoes.Botanically speaking, a fruit is a seed-bearing structure that develops from the ovary of a flowering plant, whereas vegetables are all other plant parts, such as roots, leaves and stems
http://www.livescience.com/33991-difference-fruits-vegetables.htmlI believe if you consult a dictionary, you'll find that is incorrect.
websters is not the experts on plant parts.
a tomato unquestionably is a fruit.
But because of it's savory nature- we treat it as a veggie.
Oh, I'm not questioning that it's a fruit. Many fruits are vegetables, or all, depending on which definition you choose.
Fruit is the fleshy part of a plant that contains seeds. Vegetable is the edible part of plants.
There was an actual Supreme Court case about whether or not tomatoes would be considered a fruit or a vegetable in the US. I'm surprised you've never heard of this debate before.
I hadn't actually. My debates about tomatoes come from gardening sites. Though few are about whether it's fruit or vegetable.0 -

I think we learned about the fruit/veggie debate in grade school. Maybe middle school, but definitely early on in life. Maybe it's a generational thing.

I've heard it before, mostly from school kids who just 'learned' that some fruits aren't sweet. Kind of like a strawberry isn't a fruit. But it doesn't fit the definition in any dictionary I've ever consulted. Dictionaries are where I look for word meanings. *shrug*
ETA: Unless you meant the SC debate, in which case it may well be generational.0 -
Guilty! I love those things! One summer I went the farmer's market so often, bought so many and ate them all of the time that I had a break out from the acid. Oh that didn't stop me though. That reminds me I have some for a snack today! YIPEE!!!!0

I'm not as addicted as you describe, I don't eat tomatoes every day, but when they are in season where I live, I uesd to eat them so much I broke out in hives. Took me several years to figure out why I was getting hives. Apparently some people do that when they eat too many tomatoes. So now I have to limit myself0

I love tomato's too. I will eat them like an apple, (but I can not stand tomato on a sandwich or stewed tomato's in a meal). In summer my dad grows a bunch of cherry tomoto's (thinks he does it, cuz he knows I LOVE THEM). He sends me home with approx 6 to 8 plastic containers that 1lb strawberries come in. I will take a sandwich baggie full (as much as I can stuff in it without squishing the cherry tomato's), then I put it on my desk next to my keyboard at work and eat it like a snack (better than a bag of pop corn). I do this every day through the summer, untill no more cherry tomato's sprout on the vine0

I can't stand tomatoes! Love ketchup though lol.0

I love that a joke thread on a topic that gets endlessly and fruitlessly debated... became debated on fruit. Where's Xzibit when I need him.0

I, too, am addicted to tomatoes! I had a pint of cherry tomatoes with my lunch the other day. I routinely get about 3 Roma tomatoes and cut them up, add a little seasoning salt, and relish every bite. Spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, tomatoes on pizza, stuffed tomatoes, any of them I can get my hands on. But DO NOT give me ketchup. I do not like my tomatoes sweet.0

We have hot house tomatos in BC - they are surprisingly good - especially cherry and grape varieties.0

I've only recently fallen in love with tomatoes! I used to be a ketchup addict so decided to wean myself off the sauce and replace it with the actual fruit/veg (the debate goes on) instead. Today I had 2 medium tomatoes and 6 cherry tomatoes. So delicious. Much better to be addicted to than ketchup!0
