Question regarding recipies.

So this seems like a stupid question given the whole "energy cannot be created nor destroyed" pillar of physics but thought I would ask those who know more than I do... To count calories in a recipe with many ingredients, you simply sum the calories in the individual ingredients then divide by the number of portions, correct? Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.
