Weight gain when weaning from breastfeeding?

I recently weaned my baby after breastfeeding for 15 months. While I was breastfeeding, I honestly could eat as much as I wanted and STILL lost weight. I plateaued at a weight 5 lbs above my goal but nothing I did would get me below that plateau. I figured it was hormone weight that would likely come off when I weaned. Well, I weaned about a month ago and have been exercising a lot. I also have been eating less overall (maybe still eating too much?). Instead of losing 5 pounds, I actually GAINED 7 lbs!!! No! I've been cutting calories and now have removed 2 lbs. but I'm so depressed. I don't want to live on 1500 calories...so hungry! Please fill me in on your experiences with weaning and weight gain/loss.

Hi Katy! I recently weaned my baby girl, about 6 weeks ago. I would guess you were eating more than you thought when you first weaned which is why you gained. You may also have some water weight fluctuations while your body adjusts. 1500 calories is a good weight loss level and it isn't forever. You will be able to increase calories once you reach goal. I also found I plateued above my goal but I do think it is hormonal when you are still nursing. Focus on the calories, adequate protein and have patience:-). I am finally losing the last of it bit it!0
