You don't have to cut out rice or Spaghetti. You don't have to eat any special foods just eat your normal foods at a calorie deficit and you'll lose weight. These links should help you

As mentioned you don't need to cut specific foods, but if there's a certain food you binge on, you could make healthier swaps. Still eat rice/spaghetti etc but half the portion and replace the other half with veggies. So you'll still feel full (and you'll get extra vitamins etc.

Sorry to say you can't lose weight in a specific area such as your thighs. If you eat fewer calories than you consume, you'll lose weight, but you can't control where from. You can choose to work out those areas, which will surely help with toning muscles, but it won't make fat disappear from those areas specifically.

Also, 40lbs in 5 months is a lot, especially for someone who isn't massively overweight to begin with, which you aren't. Good luck to you, but don't feel discouraged if you only lose 0.5 to 1 pound a week - that is a good rate!

I'd personally suggest forgetting the idea of losing 40 lbs in 5 months. There's nothing particularly wrong with having a goal in mind, but this seems rather aggressive and one that will be difficult to achieve and therefore potentially discouraging when it doesn't go the way you want it to. You should aim for about a half a pound loss a week, as this is more ideal to your current size.

Weight loss takes a LOT of time and a lot of effort and a lot of patience. Try not to go for drastic measures to get the pounds to fly off, it'll most likely end up hindering your progress. I have 40 lbs to lose also, I'm heavier than you are and sometimes it takes me a couple weeks to see even one pound come off (and I'm very precise with my calorie counting and I exercise every other day). So yeah, it can be tedious and slow and frustrating and you're going to have to prepare for that.

Also, you can't choose where fat comes off your body. You're just going to have to lose the weight and some will come off here and there over the course of your weight loss.

Buy a food scale, measuring cups, etc. and start weighing/measuring your foods and then log it into MFP daily.

We eat a lot of stir fry here as well. Just measure what you eat and do portion control to keep your calories so you are eating at a deficit.

As far as losing 40lbs in 5 months, that remains to be seen. If you eat at a deficit daily you will lose weight and that is the goal you are shooting for.

If you do not know what you are doing at the gym, you can always hire a trainer and then do "strong lifts 5X5" if you want to get in shape pretty quickly. It takes dedication. I am reading about it and plan to go in that direction.

First off, you're not going to bulk up while losing weight. Ask someone working there what they recommend for you. A good mix of cardio and strength training (to help retain Lean body mass) is ideal.

Second, since you aren't that far above a normal BMI, it will probably take longer to lose 40 pounds. Set your goal to a pound a week, log everything accurately and honestly, and enjoy your food. You don't have to give up rice or spaghetti, just eat them in moderation.

I initially lost weight for my mother. She is diabetic and she had stroke. We went to a diabetes specialist and got a special diet. I followed the diet with my mom to help her to eat better. I discovered that I felt better with less weight. Weight loss was not just cosmetic it was for health and wellness.

It is recommended to consume at least 1200 calories a day. This would not work for me because I love to eat. I need to eat what I like and feel full. There are different levels of calories that you can intake. It is about balance and consistence. Consult a doctor to make sure you are making the correct choice. Here is a website for diet recommendations at different calorie levels.

I lost 40 pounds in 2 years by keeping a 1600-2000 calorie per day diet without exercise. I ate whatever I wanted the secret was I did not allow myself to get hungry so I would not bing.
I measured my food and logged the calories on my online journal on calorie count.com.
I made sure to eat few servings of fruit, vegetables and dairy each day. Some days I judy ate proteins and greens. I am a meat eater.
I was satisfied with 200 calories for breakfast - special l protein shake or a hard boiled egg and a piece of fruit and 300 calories for lunch frozen entre and a fruit juice box. I did not feel hungry. This meant that I had 1100 calories for dinner after work. This was good because I could eat what I wanted and feel full. I drank diet soda.
    Best,
