psychological hurdle

As of today I'm at the 3-month mark in my current attempts to lose the weight. I've had a pattern over recent years of "lasting" that long then just going back to overeating. Also at the 30 lb mark (I'm at 26). I feel myself getting hungry, feeling deprived. And I'm really not! It's all in my head! But if I can make it past this hurdle I will feel good about myself!

Make this time, the time you WILL succeed! It's all in your hands. You can do it :smiley:

I can't see any recent food logging in your diary. But what you describe sounds like a burnout. It also sounds like you put yourself on the most restrictive plan possible in an effort to lose weight fast.

    STOP doing that. NOW.

Set a more moderate goal of weight loss. 1 lb a week maybe. 1.5 at best. Allow yourself to eat more this way, and remember that ANY calorie deficit will result in weight loss, albeit more slowly. Allow yourself treats (but log them). This way, you won't give up. Slow and steady. Slow and steady. This is not a sprint. This is a lifestyle.

Yes yes yes. See it more as a lifestyle change, not a "diet".

I find it helpful to change up my goals occasionally. So at the 3/4 month mark, I added in a target of getting exercise every day. Other goals have been related to increasing protein, potassium or fiber consumption, or changing to only decaff coffee. Recently, it's been more about fitness, although I'm still working on that one (haven't had time to do my research on setting strength targets). It just gives me something else to think about and plan around rather than just the same-old every day.

Whatever you do, though, DON'T GIVE UP!

I totally agree with the idea of changing up goals. If I have a weight where I seem to have a mental block, I try to ignore it and focus on making lunch every day or getting a certain amount of exercise or pick a new goal (like a race) to get excited about.

I also think that if you tend to get burnt out maybe taking a week at maintenance or a lower deficit every once in a while is a good idea. I was burnt out last week and have been doing this a while, so decided to reduce my deficit this week.

Evaluate your goals - make sure they're sustainable and reasonable. Also this is more than just weight loss. Fitness, health, well-being in general should factor in somewhere. So perhaps find something to concentrate on other than weight loss. Perhaps sign up for a 5k and start a couch to 5k program.

Thanks for the advice and insights. I've been pushing pretty hard lately, upping my exercise and restricting calories a lot. I have a tendency to all-or-nothing thinking which is historically why I've dropped a lot of weight only to crash and burn and resume neurotic overeating. That is my overarching goal - even if I never lose another pound, to free myself from binge eating. I tape that goal to the refrigerator door of my mind.

Denial and binges go hand-in-hand, so do try to eat more. :)
