Ok, here's the deal, ever since I have been on here, I see people talking about running so much, and about p90x ( which I had to google to check what it actually is lol).
Thing is, I don't run, i absolutely hate it but, as it seems every other soul on this website is doing it, I feel guilty. I now feel I am not doing enough compared to others.
I just do my exercises at home (wii fit, crunches, dumbells, zumba on wii..)
Does everybody run? Do you guys think it is necessary?

I don't run and never intend to. It is boring and hurts. I use my Wii fit, stationary bike and zumba classes at times. Although, I have to admit that I don't do these things every day either! You can do it without running.0

I am NOT a runner.....i do workout dvd's and stationary bike. I do walk at a brisk pace and have "tried" jogging sometimes (lasts about 30 seconds)
I am thinking of trying the C25K program though0 -
I don't think it's necessary! If you don't like to run, don't do it. There are plenty other things you can be doing to burn cals. As long as you get your heart rate up, who cares it you run!0

I definitely don't run! It hurts my legs too much.. I stick to the elliptical and Jillian Michaels DVDs .0

Some cardio is necessary for weight loss. If you dont like running, dont do it. Find a class you like, Zumba is fun and a great calorie burner. That said, I used to hate running too. But I have found that the more weight I lose and the more inshape I am getting, I really dont hate it anymore. In fact I look forward too my daily run/walk. I pop in my headphones, jam out and have sopme great me time. Or sometimes I go with a friend and that makes it more bearable too. Just find whatever works gor you as ong as you like it and will be consistant in doing it.0

You don't have to do anything. I run because I love it and a bonus is that it plays a role in weight management. But if you don't like it, don't worry about it and find something that you do enjoy.0

I only run cos it gives me time to think. Ive found it gets easier, i used to hate it so started off walking. I am now entered into the Great South Run in October which is 10 miles, i thought it was 10k so i got a bit of a shock!! Keep up doing what you are doing, well done0

I didn't run the entire time I was losing my weight. It was only after I lost the weight that I took up running so no, you don't HAVE to run. If all you can do at the moment is workout at home, then do that and make the most of it. I know a LOT of people that don't go to a gym, that have never been to a gym, and they have lost tons of weight and look fantastic.
In short, don't worry about what everyone else is doing, do what YOU can.0 -
I do run but it is not necessary. Do the workouts you enjoy, otherwise you won't stick to it. Seems you already have a lot of different activities. I would not worry about it.0

I didn't run last year. I walked all year to stay active and I walked two half marathons and completed a triathlon (walking the run part).... Do what is comfortable to you. I have never been a runner but found myself wanting to try. So I found the Couch to 5K (C25K) program that is suppose to be really good. I just find that I want to "move up" from my walking now.
To Each Their Own0 -
Not me. Used to, but knees won't take it now. And if you're not into running, chances are you won't do it regularly, which defeats the purpose anyway. Don't bother with it if you don't wanna.0

I have never been a runner in my life lol I have been doing my workouts at home just like you and that has been working just fine for me I want to try out jogging to see if I can do it, sometime in the future…but keep doing what is working for you…in my opinion, not everyone is meant to be a runner0

I hate running and don't do it. I vary my cardio between riding the bike, the different elliptical machines and walking at a 8-10 incline on the treadmill. My husband and I are also taking dance lessons so that helps.0

Not running doesn't make you lazy or not as committed. Personally, I'm a runner...but not for weight loss. I run b/c I'm a therapist and it's healthier than drinking (lol). It gives me time to process, pray, and release endorphins. It's possibly the greatest multi-tasking I can do to help myself (bc I can do so much thinking and praying) and I have a reason to get out of the house and get my alone time. So running is a self-care option for me. As far as working out for weight loss/health... I do Jillian Michaels, Zumba, dance, etc. Don't feel bad... just do what works for you lol0

I have ALWAYS hated running, I couldn't do it, BUT started the Couch to 5K program, LOVE running!! I finished the program, now I am doing it again to increase my speed. You can do it at your own pace. GREAT program! :drinker:0

I do run but no, I don't think it's necessary. Any cardio activity is going to help, regardless of what it is. You could be rock climbing or playing basketball and the weight loss will happen. So you do what you are most comfortable doing and getting the most enjoyment from. I am a runner, have been racing since I was 8 years old, and part of my weight loss has been a desire to get back to running and racing. It was harder with 30 extra pounds on me. So i went back to running because it's what I'm most comfortable with and what I really enjoy. Part of this should be fun, ya know? Otherwise, what's the point?0

I don't run...I've wanted to do it but its just not in my cards right now. I have an elliptical and do home dvds. You are not alone0

I don't run either.... I walk, take Zumba twice a week and aerobics twice a week... Zumba is a great calorie burner and alot of fun! I used to run when I was in middle school and high school and would love to be able to do that again, just have to lose enough weight so it doesn't hurt my knees so bad!!0

Lol I'm a social worker and I totally feel you on this one.0 -
Thanks everyone, I am glad to see that not every MFP user is a runner.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and replying.0 -
I don't run. I find it boring. I don't never do it, but I do it very seldom. I prefer calisthenics-type work, such as Insanity (from the same people who make P90X)....or my Muay Thai class....or sports......for my cardio work.
It is good exercise, though, don't get me wrong.0 -
I think you should run if you enjoy it. I personally don't run for weight loss... I run cause I enjoy doing it. Nothing like plugging in my earbuds and taking the first step out on the open road.0
-
Of course, not. You don't need to run. Just find some other cardio work that you can do to increase your endurance and burn calories. Whatever you like and will actually do consistently is the exercise that's right for you.
I do run but used to HATE it. I can't emphasize the "hate" part enough. But now I truly enjoy it and my dog loves it, so he guilts me into getting with it.
I run to (1) burn calories so I can eat more and not gain weight, and (2) to increase my bone density/strength. "Striking" exercises do wonders for strengthening bones and for me that's critical because I'm on thyroid meds and gastric reflux meds, both of which studies are showing dramatically increase the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. When I feel like NOT running, I think of what my life will be like when I'm 60 or 70 or better (not that far away for me!) with either osteoporosis or a strong tendency toward fractures. THAT gets me going!0 -
There's a huge amount of "do what you love" about this, in other words choose the cardio you know you enjoy and keep trying new stuff so you keep coming back.
But I'd also argue there's a big side order of "love what you do". Running to a programme may not suit you, but one of these days you might be out in the park, with no sports watch, no iPod and no C25k goal and you just start running. And the wind's in your hair and the sun's in your face. Swans are on the river with their babies. A butterfly lands on a rose bush. And you and your fit, strong legs are powering you through all this beautiful nature like they were designed to do.
Don't give up on running altogether, it might be a beautiful addition to your cardio portfolio. :flowerforyou:0 -
I don't run unless someone is chasing me
LOL!0 -
Not me. I'm too heavy. Besides when you walk and you really stretch out your stride it twists the body. So you work the torso. Then you can go further and longer.0
-
Girl please! Do what YOU enjoy doing. It is easy to fall off the wagon if you find yourself bored in your workout routine. Just make sure you are pushing your self hard enough.0
-
Yes. Running is required0
