I just lowered my calorie intake all around. I still eat carbs, I still enjoy fats (mostly healthy fats like in nuts and olive oil).

Neither...lower your calorie intake. It would be pretty hard to lower both considering the only thing left would be protein.

Dietary fat is essential to proper nutrition...if I was going to cut one I would cut carbs...but really, it isn't necessary for losing weight. I would suggest just focusing more on eating a well rounded and balanced diet that is rich in nutrition and hit your calorie goals.

Lowering both doesn't work for anyone (it's not feasible to have super high protein nor particularly healthy). Neither is necessary--you can lower calories and do balanced macros or the MFP default macros.

    This.

I found it easy to cut calories to some extent by cutting my portions of some of the carby sides, like rice or pasta/bread or potatoes, and by being more sparing in how much oil or butter I used or being careful with portion size of fattier meats (like pork shoulder or some cuts of lamb and beef), but that's because those are higher calorie items. I would do much better on lower carb than low fat personally, but luckily I don't have to do either.

You need both. It's the variety, portion size and the quality of what you eat that will matter the most.
