Are you using MFP to gauge how many calories you burned? You can't go by what MFP says alone - just b/c it says you burned 500 cals or whatever doesn't mean you actually did b/c of intensity variances etc. If you feel like you exerted more of yourself jogging, then you probably burned more jogging, and not as many playing volleyball. The best way to know is to wear a heart rate monitor.0

THANKS for the actual answer LeonaB17...that's my girl you're talking about (:0

Thanks leonab17 Do you use a heart rate monitor or can you recommend one?
Thanks shauna love you!0 -
I personally don't use on yet but my current exercise is mostly walking and jogging. As long as you log your distance and speed you can get an accurate reading via MFP. However it's when you get in the grayer areas such as playing asport, dancing, aerobics where there could be a gazillion variances due to exertion levels intensity variances etc - i would def get a hrm for your sake.
And just as a side note - i never eat ALL of my exercise calories - just b/c of these odd ball variances out there. I eat about half of them. Sometimes if i'm rather munchy i'll eat all of them, but usually i leave some behind just for extra padding incase something was wrong, wether it be incorrect intake, or incorrect burn.0 -
on a side note - i have been looking into getting a HRM for those exercises i mentioned - aerobics, zumba, sports, etc. in case i decide to partake in those activities again - but as for now - i'm fine with just bein a walker jogger:)0

Right now I'm having HRM envy! My friend has a Polar FT7 and it's really cool. It allows you to input your height, weight, age, etc. and it's really accurate. I want one! She says it's really easy to use and they have tutorials online.0

I have the Polar FT4 and really like it. It is about $30 less than the FT7, and the only difference is that you can download your data to your computer with the FT7. Since the FT7 doesn't track distance or pace (for running), I thought the extra expense unnecessary and went with the FT4. You just input your weight, age, gender and off you go.... They are both good choices.0 -

I wore my HRM for running and volleyball. I burned more playing ball than I did running. 45 minutes of running is about 400 calories for me, and 1:30 of ball was well over 550. I think for volleyball it is because of the bursts of power you use when hitting or driving to a ball...0 -
Definitely invest in a HRM. I use a Garmin 405 for running and a Timex (Consumer Reports top pick) for everything else. I have found the numbers on MFP to be all over the place so I rely solely on my HRMs. Anecdotally, I have found that your perceived rate of exertion is a good barometer...if you were spent after running moreso than volleyball, you probably burned more!0

just curious - why two different monitors? I wear my 405cx for everthing...0 -
Sadly, I don't have the CX...just the regular 405. It doesn't have the capability to use the HRM w/o the GPS on which doesn't work indoors at all. I have found that the Timex and the Garmin are pretty spot on w/ calorie burn.0
