Ok, so I went to the doctor today. It's the first time I have been since I started this journey back in August. The nurse asked me to get on the scale so she could get my weight and height. She was pleasantly surprised that I was down 20+ pounds since a year ago. :drinker:  She turned me around and checked my height. Now for the last, oh 15+ years I have been 5 feet 4.5 inches without shoes. When she checked today, I was 5 feet 4 inches! I know you lose inches when you lose weight but I always thought is was horizontal inches not vertical inches! Oh well, Hope I don't lose anymore vertically!!! Anyone else ever notice this? Maybe she measured wrong. Just had to share my laugh for the day! Have a great one!! :flowerforyou:

I started losing height by centimeters in college. I feel your pain! I once was 5'5 and 3/4". I am hovering around 5'4'' or 5'4.5''

    Oh great!:noway:
I'm already known as the midget of my family - my DH being 6ft 4", my 17 yr old being 6ft 2" and my 11 yr old being 5ft 6", I really must go out and buy a few [pairs of 3"+ stilleto heals - and probably never be able to walk in a straight line ever again, but hey, at least I won't get any smaller - vertically!

It's unlikely that weight loss itself caused you to lose height.

It could be measurement error - either the nurse's reading or the scale she used, today AND on all the previous occasions that your height has been taken. Which one is really correct? Who knows?

Or it could be your posture. That's something I have to work on all the time. Perhaps consider adding some spine-lengthening yoga to your workout routine. And maybe your next reading will be taller.

Every time I think of height, I think of my ex husband's family. The ex is 6'8" and his mother is the midget in the bunch at ONLY 6'0", with one sister being 6'1", the other sister being 6'2" and 4 brothers ranging from 6'2" to 6'5" and his father (rest him) was also 6'8". I'm 5'2" if I stand realllyyy straight so I have to say nothing else for the years I was part of that family ~ I looked up to them........literally

    Hi Karen,

I've had that same problem. I used to be 5'10" and now I'm 5'8" on a good day. I think you lose height with age. The worst part is as you shrink in height your weight needs to be less too. Great, like I don't already have enough problems!

Height can diminish as you age. There are many reasons for it but most don't have to do with diet.

I hear you - I have be 5'10" all my life only to be measured at 5'8" a month ago. WTF? They have checked for non-secreting Multiple Myloma, did bone density scans for fractures, a thoracic MRI and more other tests than I care to post. I am throwing blood clots spontaneously and they still can't find the root cause. I swear I must glow in the dark when I go out at night. We have come so far in medicine yet still so much we don't know about our bodies. Hope you are getting good care.

People also shrink slightly as the day goes on...gravity takes its toll. Most people are taller in the morning than they are at bedtime, shrinking as much as half an inch due to the compression of the fluid in the space between the bones of the spine.

Couldn't it be possible for the fat we gained around the belly area lift our rib cages slightly thus adjusting our spine and height a little? I found when I was pregnant I had gained an inch and a half in height.. She said most likely the baby pushing my organs up and my rib Cage.. I have hypermobility syndrome so it isn't unusual for my muscles to stretch more than usual. But no idea otherwise.. Unless like the above said.. Gravity! Or spinal issues.. Slouching etc.

you seem a little young for osteoporosis. My guess is that it was probably a measurement error. In my physicals, I've gone from 6'1" to 6'2" and vice versa for about 15 years or so now.
