Okay, so I have been having a relating problem this past week. I hear people who are having trouble with binge eating, emotional eating, bored eating... and I am none of these. I read lovely Elizabeth's post about asking yourself first WHY you are eating this thing. I waited the 3 minutes (I even timed it) and then I still wanted the thing. (Didn't eat it though).

Why did I want it? Its because it tastes good! Its like asking myself why I don't pinch myself every 5 seconds. It hurts, why would I do it? So why would I deny myself something that brought me happiness? Good tasting food is supposed to bring us pleasure, and oh it does.

How do you combat that? And am I just being amazingly shallow? I know its basically a self control thing, and we should view eating as just fuel for our body. But again, its like saying we should view sex as simply a means of procreation...

Anyone out there that just eats because its yummy? :flowerforyou:

If you can remember the old adage, "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" then maybe that will help. :flowerforyou:

I read an article once that says certain people are addicted to food in the same way that others are addicted to drugs. When the food crosses your taste buds, you get an instant euphoria, same as a drug user gets with their high.

I crave and eat tons of food just because it tastes good and I want it right then and there, but I know it's not mentally 'healthy', so to speak. I mean, the food will still be there later for me to eat, and if I'm not hungry- physically hungry- then why am I eating?

Maybe you don't have a trigger. Maybe you are just a food addict, plain and simple? The 'high' of good tasting food is your downfall?
  • that's how i am with chocolate. i don't eat chocolate to make myself full to because i'm bored or emotional. i eat chocolate (probably more than i should?) because it takes very very yummy and i doubt i could survive without it.

I think addition is a strong word. I think you can enjoy things and not be addicted to them. However, thank you! That kind of sparked my answer to my own question.

My problem is probably just a lack of knowledge up until this point. I've been wondering why this new lifestyle is so amazingly easy. I can 'not eat' a food, or a large quantity of food with very little trouble. I would LIKE to, but I can stop myself.

As weird as this sounds, I think I just never made the connection between eating and being fat. Since I have ALWAYS been chubby, since I was born until now, I just thought it was the way I was supposed to be. :ohwell: Never knowing anything else, I just ate like I would have anyway.

Now that I have a goal, it is a simple matter of recognizing what is contrary to my goal - Shannon, that quote is exactly what I'm talking about! - and avoiding it.

Thank you MFPers, I guess weight loss helps you learn more about yourself, not just get skinny. :flowerforyou: :smooched:

I'm such a good cook and I eat because things are Yummy. Kind of like the cooking Rat on Ratetolli (sp). I love to mix different things and create new tastes. My biggest problem is that I taste so much while I'm cooking that I'm full when we sit down to eat (we eat as a family for supper most nights), but I still feel like I have to eat.

Anna - I am exactly the same way. It is a very common phenomenon among cooks. Unfortunately, it makes it harder to count your portions.

I too eat things because they taste good... but who says healthy, lower calorie options can't taste good too? If I want a treat I eat it, I either fit it into my day, or throw in some exercise to make it fit. Food is supposed to taste good, if it didn't, we'd all starve to death. Just try to find healthy options that also taste good :flowerforyou:

I guess that's why some say "never trust a skinny chef"

BTW... I eat food because it''s yummy too. But what I do is I balance the cals....

example from earlier today....I can have that one granola bar or ....that giant ripe pear. I go for what more for less. I ate the pear:heart:

I've found that the trick to staying slim is to find activities that you enjoy more than "yummy."

the exhilaration of a brisk walk on a crisp autumn day
the suspense of a good novel - or my favorite nighttime drama
the fun of playing fetch with or petting my sister's puppy
the satisfaction of a good mani/pedicure and how elegant my nails look afterward
the thrill of dancing, of skiing, a roller coaster, or a fast drive!

These things beat "yummy" for me any day. They may not always be available - and perhaps chocolate gelato is a more reliable source of pleasure - but I feel better longer when I choose an activity rather than a food as my source of pleasure.
