Can anyone recommend a Heart Rate Monitor that will also count calories? Are the ones that have a chest strap more accurate? Thanks!

I have a Timex, bought it on Amazon and love it, it do count the calories too. :) And yes the chest strap is more accurate. :)

I have the Polar FT4 and love it. Easy to use, factors in sex, age, height and weight to give you an accurate count.

I've just gotten a Polar FT40 and its lush. So easy to set up. Its counts calories and tells you the percentage which should be fat calories (how accurate that is I don't know). You can also transfer your training data on to a free software you can download so you can track and plan your work outs to reach targets.

I had a Mio without a strap & the main issue was that you had to constantly take readings by pushing a button & holding your thumb on the face of it & half the time it couldn't get a reading. Most chest strap models will take constant readings every second you are working out and you don't have to do anything to get them to do this. Non-chest strap ones will only use as many readings as you manually put in by pressing the button on it so they are nowhere near as accurate.

I am currently using a Polar FT4 too & really like it. It's really easy to use & shows you things like calories burned, current HR, how long you were in "the zone", etc.

    Sportsline Duo
$119 with included 2 year warrenty
    Chest strap and watch
Height, weight, gender to do your settings

Great and seems quite accurate on distance and cals!

I just ordered the polar FT4F on amazon. I have been looking for a while, this one has great reviews, and comes with the chest strap, and amazon had the best prices of any that I found. Good luck!

I've been thinking about picking a Polar model up this weekend - I've never used a monitor with a chest strap - does anyone find it to be uncomfortable or a pain when you are working out? Do you use it strictly for cardio or for both cardio and strength workouts?

I don't find the strap uncomfortable but i recognize that it might be different for women than for men.

I use mine for cardio & strength workouts. Most likely know this, but when doing resistance training, if you push yourself you'll likely get a good amount of after burn (calories burned after you've finished the actual workout). I keep the monitor on until my HR drops down to around my normal level.

No not at all. It literally sits just under your bra so its a bit like having a bra thats a little tight round the rib cage (normally what a higher impact sports bra feels like anyhow).

Luckily I'm a guy - so I'm going to have to guess how that sports bra feels :)

Thanks for the replies everyone - I'm going to go shopping around this weekend for one I think
